RecycLearn

14. March 2022.

SWM agrees to support their city in the mission to become carbon neutral in the areas of mobility and energy. An article about urban mining inspired the public service company to find a way to increase the recycling rate in Munich to keep more raw materials in the material cycle instead of extracting these valuable resources from the earth. According to the Waste Management Company Munich (AWM), the recycling rate in Munich was 56.3% in 2020 and most of the garbage thrown away in the city of Munich was residual waste. Since most of this is incinerated, the materials used are lost forever. To increase the recycling rate, the citizens of Munich must be empowered to act responsibly and consciously when separating waste.

To create a solution here, Stadtwerke München (SWM) decided to work together with the Co-Innovation Lab of the Munich University of Applied Sciences and called on an international student team of 10 bachelor and master students from the fields of business and IT from the Munich University of Applied Sciences and the TAMK to develop a creative solution. With “RecycLearn”, the student team has developed an interactive application intended to convey information about recycling processes to people of all ages. By simply uploading or photographing the product to be disposed of or the product packaging, the image recognition software recognizes the product category based on a connected database and provides information about the raw materials contained in the product.

The challenge was processed as a joint project between the DTLab and the Co-Innovation-Lab of the Munich University of Applied Sciences. The Co-Innovation-Lab is an overarching concept for innovation projects between students and companies. For this purpose, temporary innovation partnerships - in the form of projects - are created between companies, students, and lecturers. Initiated by Prof. Holger Günzel and Prof. Lars Brehm (both Munich University), more than 25 innovation projects per year are currently being carried out, often interdisciplinary.

During the challenge, the students received support from AWS.
