This is because, when selecting scholarship recipients, HM places great importance on above-average academic performance as well as criteria such as community involvement and personal or family circumstances.

Sponsors + Federal Government = Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship)
The programme is based on the ‘matching fund’ principle. This means that for every amount that you and other sponsors contribute to the scholarship, the federal government will match it with an equal amount.
Under this ‘public-private partnership’, sponsors and the public sector therefore share the valuable investment in the training of the next generation of academics and support future specialists and managers here in Germany.
Companies and organisations such as foundations, societies, associations, etc. can co-fund as many scholarships as they wish.
The grant amounts to €1,800 per scholarship and funding year. This means that scholarship holders receive €300 per month – €150 from you and €150 from the federal government.
HM enters into a written agreement with the sponsors. It is possible to earmark the funding for specific fields of study that are particularly close to your heart, subject to the provisions of the Scholarship Programme Act (StipG).
The funding approval is valid for at least one full funding period and, at HM, covers the period from 1 October of one year to 30 September of the following year (= one winter and one summer semester).

Process & Steps
HM announces the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship) once a year during the summer semester and awards the scholarships at the start of the winter semester. Funding under the Deutschlandstipendium begins in October and lasts for 12 months.
In principle, you can contact us at any time to discuss your funding requirements. Your grant funds can then be carried over into the following funding period.

selection procedure
The selection of scholarship recipients is carried out by Hochschule München in accordance with the Scholarship Programme Act (StipG) and based on defined selection criteria (see also ‘Hochschule München Guidelines on the Award of Germany Scholarships’).
The selection panel consists of a member of the university management, a lecturer (i.e. a Professor) and two representatives of the Student Parliament. Students who are expected to achieve, or have already achieved
, above-average performance in their studies are eligible for funding. In addition, the applicant’s personal, family and private circumstances are taken into account. Furthermore, social engagement, as well as experience and activities in the three funding priorities defined by Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) as part of its strategic development in teaching, research and continuing education, are also considered:
- Entrepreneurial thinking and action
- Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (Education for Sustainable Development)
- International experience and intercultural competence
Once the final selection decision has been made, funded students and sponsors are usually matched on an individual basis.
Distinctive feature

students at Universities of Applied Sciences are often the first in their families to undertake a degree course (first-generation students).
Many of these students are characterised not only by their exceptional determination, but also by their intention to enter the workforce quickly after completing their studies. They often bring with them practical experience and initial professional qualifications. At
Hochschule München, the desire to advance one’s career through an excellent and practically-oriented university education is particularly supported and recognised through the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship). Three key funding priorities, defined as part of the strategic development of teaching, research and continuing professional development, are a further distinguishing feature of the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship) at Hochschule München. These are taken into account both in the selection and allocation of scholarship holders and in the supporting events.

Furthermore, we are keen to encourage mutual contact between scholarship recipients and scholarship providers. One way we do this is by introducing funding partners and scholarship recipients to one another by name, subject to mutual consent.
An exchange on equal terms
Each winter semester, we invite participants to a joint kick-off event to mark the start of the funding year. In addition, we offer and support opportunities to organise supplementary events throughout the funding year.
Supportive & Support
Institutional sponsors such as companies, foundations, associations or organisations may co-fund one or more full scholarships. The amount of the grant is €1,800 per scholarship per funding year.
In addition, private individuals can also contribute to the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship), for example with donations of €50 or more.
The Friends of Hochschule München Association pools these donations and makes them available to the Hochschule München in the form of scholarships.
Full amounts
As a private or institutional sponsor, you will enter into a written sponsorship agreement with HM, setting out, amongst other things, the start date, duration, amount of the sponsorship and the relevant contact persons. We will then get in touch with you regarding the specific payment arrangements. Once the annual amount has been paid as a lump sum, we will issue you with a donation receipt upon request.

Provided both parties agree, HM is happy to facilitate contact between sponsors and ‘their’ scholarship holders. For example, an initial get-together takes place as part of the kick-off event for the scholarship year. Furthermore, sponsors are free to invite their scholarship holders to events, for example, to provide them with a mentor, or to offer them an internship. However, participation is not compulsory for the students.
Use of funds
Under the Scholarship Programme Act (StipG), up to two-thirds of the scholarship funds raised by the university may be earmarked for specific subject areas or degree programmes. However, this also means that at least one-third of the scholarship funds must be made available to the university without being earmarked for any specific purpose. The aim of this provision is to ensure an even distribution of scholarships across the subject areas.

Start of the funding period
At Hochschule München, the Germany Scholarships are awarded at the start of the winter semester (= mid- to late October).
Students who wish to qualify for funding under the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship) scheme, starting in October, must submit an application as early as May.
In order to be able to announce the expected number of available scholarships in the call for applications, we ask sponsors to let us know as early as possible whether they wish to contribute and, if so, to what extent. Later commitments to provide funding are also possible and can still be taken into account for the coming funding period until around the end of August / beginning of September.
Number of scholarships
The maximum number of Deutschlandstipendien is (since July 2013) limited by law to a maximum of 1.5 per cent of a higher education institution’s students (as at July 2026).
Since the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship) was launched at the HM in the winter semester of 11/12, between 46 and 80 scholarships have been awarded each funding year.
The number of scholarships depends on the commitment of private sponsors and the amount of funding they provide.
Objectives
Social mobility through education
Through the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship), the Federal Government aims to support high-achieving and responsible students across all disciplines. It also aims to remove financial barriers that prevent people from starting studies.
The German Government’s primary objective has been, and remains, to improve educational equity in Germany. Greater mobility within the education system means more individual educational opportunities, more prospects for social advancement and participation, and, at the same time, a greater supply of skilled and top-level professionals for business and academia.
Public-Private Partnership
The Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship) also aims to establish a culture of scholarships within the German higher education sector. In the spirit of a public-private partnership, the private and public sectors share this valuable investment in the education of the next generation of academics. This is also intended to further promote networking between universities, businesses and institutions.
