International students

My time in Munich was unforgettable. There were always fun things to do, like going to museums and festivals. My stay at HM was great, I found all my classes extremely interesting and I had great professors that encouraged participation and always offered support. In addition, the International Office staff was always kind and helpful. I decided to go to Munich because I love German culture and I wanted to experience life in Germany. I was so lucky to find in HM the perfect match for my programme. I loved learning German, the Christmas markets and snow-covered Munich. It was an amazing experience!

Being able to live in Munich for five months was an once-in-a-lifetime experience. Germany may not seem as appealing as other exotic destinations but I can promise you that it is going to change. Before you know it, you will fall in love with this city – because a stay in Munich has so much to offer! There are some memories I cherish more than others: Oktoberfest, going to a Bayern Munich soccer game, sunbathing in the English Garden or drinking Glühwein at the Weihnachtsmarkt. I chose Munich as a place to study first of all because of its location and secondly because of its economic infrastructure. Famous companies like BMW or Siemens have their headquarters in Munich. The International Office is really efficient, tries its best to answer all of your questions and to give you advice. Moreover, you will be matched with a local student from HM who will help you if needed. My German buddy became a close friend and we are still in touch.

A professor from HM noticed me at my home university in Italy and suggested I complete my master’s thesis with him in Munich. Since childhood, I had dreamed of visiting Germany, so this was a perfect opportunity. Although I didn’t know much about Munich beforehand, I quickly discovered it’s one of the best cities to live in. As an Erasmus+ Traineeship student, I faced more bureaucratic challenges than regular Erasmus+ students, but I received tremendous support from my advisor, his assistant, and my office colleague. The International Club (a group of HM students) organizes fantastic events and trips, blending culture, sports, and fun while exploring all Germany has to offer. The smiles and shared moments with people from all over the world are memories I’ll never forget.

Before starting at HM, I spent a year at Studienkolleg Coburg, which helped me significantly improve my German, allowing me to follow lectures without language barriers from day one. I also had to learn how to study effectively – like understanding exam formats and figuring out the best ways to prepare. In other words, these are topics that concern all students starting their studies. I chose HM because I’m fond of Bavaria, and the university has a strong reputation. I also appreciate Munich for its many job opportunities and the wide range of leisure activities the city offers, such as hiking and skiing.

I loved my time studying abroad at HM as an undergraduate student in software engineering so much that I came back for a research exchange in my graduate program. Munich is a beautiful city and there's so much in the area to explore, whether that's wandering through the shops on Kaufingerstraße and stalls at the Viktualienmarkt, strolling through the English Garden, visiting amazing castles nearby like Neuschwanstein, or hitting up the night life near Karlsplatz. I had excellent support throughout my stay from my advisor at HM and from the International Office, so I never felt like I was alone in the city. However, I think the most rewarding aspect of my stay truly was becoming friends with and getting to know some of the locals! My German language skills have improved dramatically, and I've made connections that I know will last past my short stay there.

The support team provided all the necessary documents for my visa application and helped secure a great-value student apartment – everything I needed before arriving. It was also a good opportunity to learn more about Germany and the nearby cities – and even neighbouring countries. Still, nothing can truly prepare you for the real-life experience. Stay relaxed and ready to adapt. In my opinion, Germany stands out among major economic powers for its successful social welfare policies. Here, you can learn much more than just science—and perhaps find ways to support your own country more than you expected.

The students at HM Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences are always provided with 100% information. This is something I really like.

My first impression of Munich was an extremely safe environment in a fairly large city. There were so many opportunities for places to see, people to meet and areas to practice my German. I was greeted warmly by the welcome buddy HM prepared for me. She really helped me in getting settled and finding my way through the bureaucratic difficulties. HM has been very supportive! The international office has a wonderful team that has taught me a lot of things that I will bring back to my home university in Philadelphia.

My dream is to become a car engineer, and Germany, particularly Munich, is a leader in the automotive industry. Given my strong interest in mechanical technology, the first thing I did was visit the Deutsches Museum and the BMW Museum. Munich is also home to one of the biggest festivals in the world, Oktoberfest. It’s a fantastic celebration with a wide variety of beers and warm-hearted German people. Additionally, Munich offers various sports facilities in Olympiapark, including swimming, dancing, and badminton. I can confidently say that Munich is the perfect city in the world to study while enjoying culture and sports.

I chose HM Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences because it offers applied study in an economically strong location, which is why I stayed with the university not only for my bachelor’s degree but also for the master’s. During my studies, I gained insights into many areas of electrical engineering. The good level of contact with the teachers and the support of the administrative staff were much appreciated.
Amirabbas Sahab, Iran
I visited Munich as a child during Oktoberfest, and I really enjoyed it. Since Germany and HM Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences excel in my field of study, cartography, it was very important for me to pursue my education here.

Munich is a fantastic city; you can easily get around by bike or train, which is amazing!
