At the research institute IAMLIS, Munich University of Applied Sciences combines the methodological and technical expertise from several faculties in the fields of machine learning and intelligent systems. The scientists advance the development of AI core competencies and support the transfer of research and technology.

The Institute for Material and Building Research was founded in July 2019 as one of the first research institutes at Munich University of Applied Sciences and represents the faculties of architecture, civil engineering and mechanical engineering. The focus is on the long-term preservation and sustainable development of building and infrastructure. Future research topics include the durability of materials, structures, and buildings; resource efficiency and life cycle considerations; and reliability and safety.

The Society, Health and Education: Research Center aims to identify underlying mechanisms of social change as well as their effects at an early stage, to effectively anticipate undesirable effects and to help secure positive consequences. From an interdisciplinary perspective, such future challenges facing the social, health and education systems in the long term are to be analysed. Specific research areas include resource scarcity, over-indebtedness and sustainability, skills shortages, discrimination and resilience.

CENERGIE develops total solutions for future buildings in the context of the energy transition. On the one hand, the focus is on researching and developing new engineering tools for planning and predictive strategies for operational management. At the same time, pilot and development projects in the field of heating, cooling and electricity generation and storage are being actively pursued. This involves working with sustainable and efficient architectural concepts.

Oskar-von-Miller-Award of the HM

Oskar von Miller is best known in Munich as the founder of the Deutsches Museum. In addition, he was a pioneer and early advocate of a versatile and practice-oriented education. The HM Munich University of Applied Sciences is committed to this attitude for an application-oriented academic education and honors outstanding achievements once a year in a ceremony, awarding the Oskar in the following categories: "Excellent Promotion", "Applied Research", "Quality in Teaching", "Excellent Degrees" and "Partner of Practice".

Here we present the "Oskar" award winners in the categories "Excellent Promotion" and "Applied Research":

"Oskar" award winners 2024

Prof Dr Stefan Wallentowitz is awarded the 2024 Oskar von Miller Prize for ‘Applied Research and Development’ by Munich University of Applied Sciences. This year's criteria for the award were the amount of third-party funding raised at national and international level and the successful establishment of a transdisciplinary network. A strong research network makes it possible to actively shape one's own research area, the HM research profile and research policy. Prof Wallentowitz's research focuses on chip design based on the RISC-V open processor architecture. He was involved in the internationally leading ecosystem of the open RISC-V instruction set standard from the very beginning and is now one of the board members. Dr Frédéric Lapierre receives the ‘Oscar’ from Munich University of Applied Sciences for his outstanding doctoral thesis in the field of industrial engineering/biotechnology, supervised by Prof. Dr Huber and in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University (Prof. Dr Büchs). The doctoral thesis was largely completed as part of the research project ‘MicrobialCrete - Application of biocementation in the construction industry’, the dissertation is entitled ‘Development of bioprocesses for the biocementation microorganism Sporosarcina pasteurii’. In his research, Mr Lapierre achieved significant success in the optimised cultivation of a specific bacterium with the ability to produce lime. This development makes it possible to stabilise loosely packed materials such as sand, which could provide a more environmentally friendly option for the production of building materials. Mr Lapierre has published his research results in high-impact scientific journals and presented them at specialist conferences, as well as contributing to teaching and continuing his work as a postdoctoral researcher at the university
