- Valid passport or identification card

Residence Registration Office:
Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR) - Bürgerbüro (ground floor)
Ruppertstraße 19
80337 Munich (U3 or U6 Poccistraße)

Who needs to apply for a visa before arrival?
Citizens of EU and EFTA countries:
a valid passport is all that you need to enter Germany.
Citizen from other countries:
All students from countries outside Europe must apply for a visa from the relevant German diplomatic agency in their home country (Embassy or Consulate) before entering Germany. For further information, please consult the German diplomatic agency in your home country (or the country you are currently studying in).
Exception: exchange students with a citizenship of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea, New Zealand or the USA do not need an entry visa, but a residence permit (see below). However, please always check current visa regulations.
Important:
- The visa must be issued for the appropriate purpose of the stay (= studies).
- A tourist visa or so-called "Schengen visa" is not sufficient.
- It is not possible to change the type of visa after entering Germany.
- For multiple entries into Germany, e.g. to return after visiting home, it is recommended to apply for a "multiple-entry visa".
- Visas that are issued by the German diplomatic agencies for a maximum of three months have to be extended after this period at the German Bureau for Foreigners in Munich as a residence permit.
- Exchange students from Australia, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, the U.S. and South Korea (without visa prior to entry into Germany) also need to apply for a residence permit at the Immigration Office after three months.
- Please note the period of validity of the visa without fail.
- In case you need to open up a blocked account as part of your visa application, please make sure to carefully look into the various offers. Often cheaper deals are not really better and there had been problems with small providers in the past. We recommend choosing a well-established provider that has been on the market for a while.
Who needs to apply for a residence permit?
1. Citizens of EU and EFTA countries do not require a residence permit.
2a. Students from countries outside the EU, who are planning to stay in Germany longer than three months, must hold a valid residence permit issued by the Foreigners Office ("Ausländerbehörde") at the Department of Public Order (Kreisverwaltungsreferat - KVR).
- If you applied for a visa before your arrival and it is valid for the whole stay, you do not need an additional residence permit. If your visa only covers the beginning of your stay, you will need to apply for a residence permit within the first 90 days of their stay.
- Exchange students with a citizenship of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea, New Zealand or the USA can enter Germany without a visa, but need to apply for a residence permit within the first 90 days of their stay.
2b. Students from countries outside the EU but studying in an EU state and granted with a residence permit from an EU state (except GB, IRL, DK - subject to change without notice) can apply for an easier residence permit procedure through Hochschule München (HM) directly. HM will contact eligible students directly. More information on the website of BAMF - Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
