Registration of Residency
All students are required to register their place of residence at the local registration office within 14 days of arriving in Germany.
To complete this process, you must register (and later deregister) at the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR). Appointments are required, and further details are available on the KVRwebsite.
Which documents do I need for the registration?
- Registration form (available at the registration office)
- Valid passport or identification card
- "Wohnungsgeberbestätigung" (confirmation by landlord or property owner)

Ruppertstraße 19
80337 Munich (U3 or U6 Poccistraße)
Phone: + 49 (0)89 233-96000
Opening hours and more information (including documents) can be found on the website of the Residence Registration Office.
Who needs to apply for a visa before arrival?
Citizens of EU and EFTA countries:
A valid passport is all that you need to enter Germany.
Citizen from other countries:
Students from non-European countries must apply for a visa at the German Embassy or Consulate in their home country before traveling to Germany. For specific information, consult the German diplomatic mission in your country (or the country where you are currently studying).
Exception: exchange students with a citizenship of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea, New Zealand or the USA do not need an entry visa, but a residence permit (see below). However, please always check current visa regulations.
Important:
- The visa must explicitly state the purpose of your stay (e.g., "studies").
- A tourist or "Schengen visa" is not sufficient.
- It is not possible to change the type of visa after entering Germany.
- If you plan to travel in and out of Germany (e.g., visiting home), request a multiple-entry visa.
- Visas issued by German consulates for up to three months must be extended into a residence permit at the Munich Immigration Office after arrival.
- Exchange students from Australia, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, or the USA (who enter without a visa) also need to apply for a residence permit within three months of arriving.
- Always check the validity period of your visa to avoid complications.
Blocked Accounts for Visa Applications
If a blocked account is required as part of your visa application, compare providers carefully. While cheaper options may seem appealing, issues have been reported with smaller providers in the past. It’s recommended to choose a well-established and reliable provider with a proven track record.
Who needs to apply for a residence permit?
1. Citizens of EU and EFTA countries do not require a residence permit.
2a. Students from non-EU countries planning to stay in Germany for more than three months must obtain a valid residence permit from the Foreigners Office ("Ausländerbehörde") at the Department of Public Order (Kreisverwaltungsreferat - KVR).
- If you applied for a visa before your arrival and it covers your entire stay, no additional residence permit is needed.
- If your visa only covers the beginning of your stay, you must apply for a residence permit within the first 90 days of your stay.
- Exchange students from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea, New Zealand, or the USA do not need a visa to enter Germany but must apply for a residence permit within the first 90 days of their stay.
2b. Students from non-EU countries who are studying in another EU country and hold a residence permit from an EU state (except the UK, Ireland, and Denmark – subject to change) can apply for a simplified residence permit procedure through Hochschule München (HM).
- HM will contact eligible students directly.
- For more information, please refer to the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).

What do I have to do when moving?
- If you move within Munich, you must register your new address with the registration office.
- No de-registration is required when you move to a different city within Germany. Your new registration automatically cancels your previous registration in Munich.
What do I have to do when leaving Germany?
De-registration Before Leaving Germany
Before leaving Germany, ensure that you de-register your address. Failure to do so could create complications if you plan to return to Germany in the future.
If you move to another city within Germany, there is no need to de-register in Munich. Your registration at the new address will automatically update your records and de-register you from Munich.
How to De-register
You can de-register in one of the following ways:
- In person: Visit the Bürgerbüro of the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR) during its opening hours.
- By post: Complete the de-registration form and send it to:
Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR) - Bürgerbüro (Ground Floor)
Ruppertstraße 19
80337 München
Phone: +49 (0)89 233-96000
