Erasmus+ funding options
Discover Erasmus+ funding opportunities for international mobility and exchange
The Erasmus+ grant is funded by the European Union and provides financial support for your Erasmus+ placement. Provided that all the terms and conditions of the Erasmus+ programme are met, you do not need to pay back this grant.
Below you can find all the relevant information.
Please note that some of the resources or documents are available in German only.
All participants in the Erasmus+ programme receive Erasmus+ funding. The maximum funding period (study and internship programme) is 360 days (12 months) per degree cycle (bachelor's degree/master's degree).
- You must be enrolled at Hochschule München during your Erasmus+ placement and must therefore re-register by the deadline.
- You are eligible for Erasmus+ funding for a maximum of 360 days (12 months) per degree cycle (BA/MA). You may combine a semester abroad with an internship (e.g. one semester abroad plus one internship, or two semesters abroad, or two internships), provided that the 360-day limit per degree cycle is not exceeded.
- For Erasmus+ semester: You will earn at least 15 ECTS credits. These do not have to be subject-specific, nor do they have to be recognised by Hochschule München.
- For Erasmus+ internship: There is no minimum number of ECTS credits required for internships abroad, but you do need a valid internship contract.
| Group of countries | Countries |
|---|---|
| Country Group 1 Programme countries with a high cost of living | Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Norway, Sweden |
| Country Group 2 Programme countries with an average cost of living | Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Cyprus |
| Country Group 3 Programme countries with a low cost of living | Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary |
| Worldwide Region 14 Partner countries in Region 14 | United Kingdom |
Erasmus funding for studying abroad (Student Mobility for Studies, SMS) varies from country to country. Please refer to the table below for the monthly rates.
Due to limited funding, HM students receive financial support for a maximum of 120 days.
If you stay abroad for more than 120 days, you will not receive any financial support for the remaining days ('zero grant'), but you will continue to benefit from all other Erasmus+ advantages (see also the information on 'zero grant' below, last point in the list).
---
Under EU rules, a month always has 30 days. For example: October is counted as having 30 days rather than 31.
| Group | Monthly payments (SMS) (from the 2025 summer semester) |
|---|---|
| Country Group 1 Programme countries with a high cost of living | €600 per month (30 days) / €20 per day |
| Country Group 2 Programme countries with an average cost of living | €540 per month (30 days) / €18 per day |
| Country Group 3 Programme countries with a low cost of living | €540 per month (30 days) / €18 per day |
| Worldwide Region 14 Partner countries in Region 14 | €600 per month (30 days) / €20 per day |
| As of July 2026. Subject to change! |
If you are spending time abroad in a Group 1 country, bear in mind that the cost of living is higher than in Germany, especially in metropolitan areas such as Paris and Rome.
For an internship abroad (Student Mobility for Placements, SMP), there is a top-up of €150 in addition to the monthly grant for a semester abroad. Due to limited funding, HM students receive financial support for a maximum of 120 days.

* Funding for a stay in the United Kingdom was available as normal up to and including the 2022/23 winter semester due to Brexit. Further information can be found here
on our general Erasmus+ website in the section ‘United Kingdom’. Due to the new lead times for visas etc., SMP applications for the UK must be submitted to the International Office at least four months before the start of the placement.
In addition to the standard Erasmus+ grant, you will automatically receive a travel allowance. The amount depends on the distance to your partner university or placement and whether your outward and return journeys are low-emission (see the information on 'Green Travel' below). When calculating the distance, Munich is considered the starting point and the location of your partner university or placement the destination.
| Distance calculation using the EU Distance Calculator |
Travel allowance without 'Green Travel' |
Travel allowance with 'Green Travel' |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 99 km | €28 | €56 |
| 100 to 499 km | €211 | €285 |
| 500 to 1,999 km | €309 | €417 |
| 2,000 to 2,999 km | €395 | €535 |
| 3,000 to 3,999 km | €580 | €785 |
| 4,000 to 7,999 km | €1,188 | €1,188 |
| from 8,000 km | €1,735 | €1,735 |
Days of travel
You may be granted additional travel days for your outward and return journeys. The daily rate per travel day is the same as the daily rate for your general Erasmus+ grant.
Please note:
- No additional travel days if the distance between Munich and the partner university or placement location is less than 500 km
- 2 days' travel for distances of 500 km or more
- more than 2 and up to a maximum of 6 days’ travel, available only with Green Travel (see below)
The Erasmus+ programme supports the use of sustainable transport for travel to and from the place where you do your exchange semester or internship.
The following are considered low-emission and therefore sustainable modes of transport:
- Rail
- Long-distance coach
- Bike
- Car shared with other students (carpooling)
- Starting with call 2026,travel by ship will be considered environmentally friendly if it is combined with other low-emission modes of transportation.
Not considered as sustainable:
-
- Flights (even if CO₂ offsets are used)
- Car (when used alone)
- ship (until call 2025)
Grants for 'Green Travel':
If your journey takes longer than it would using a non-sustainable mode of transport, you will receive a grant equivalent to the standard daily rate for a maximum of six additional days of travel, in addition to the standard Erasmus+ grant.
Applications for additional funding for 'Green Travel' must be submitted by returning the Grant Agreement together with the Declaration of Compliance within the general submission deadlines.
Starting with call 2026: At least half of the trip (50% or more of the total distance) must be traveled using low-emission transportation.
Study semester abroad: If you have been selected for an exchange place (SMS) at a partner university, you will automatically receive Erasmus+ funding. To receive the funds, you must submit all the necessary documents, in particular the Grant Agreement, by the deadline. You will receive all the relevant information once your application has been successful – after the application deadline.
Internship abroad: To apply for funding for an internship (SMP), please submit your application directly to the International Office once the company has confirmed your placement.
---
Please note the deadlines for applying for funding.
It is no longer possible to submit an application at a later date, particularly after the start of the stay abroad.
No, the grant is a mobility allowance and does not need to be paid back. However, if you no longer meet the eligibility criteria, fail to submit the required documents by the deadline, or have received a higher grant than you are entitled to (e.g. due to a premature termination of your stay), the grant must be repaid in full or in part.
SMS – Study Abroad:
You will receive your funding shortly before your Erasmus+ semester has begun. To ensure this, you must have submitted all the necessary documents to the International Office by the deadline.
Payment of the first instalment (70%): August/September (winter term) or January/February (summer term)
Payment of the second instalment (30%): following the timely submission of all documents after the stay abroad
SMP – Internship:
Payment of the first instalment (80%): once your application has been processed and successfully approved
Payment of the second instalment (20%): following the timely submission of all documents after the stay abroad
Note regarding payment:
Students will receive an email notification when the instalments are paid.
Please note that it may take up to six weeks for your Erasmus+ grant to be paid into your bank account.
Zero grant days are days during your Erasmus+ study period for which you do not receive any financial support, i.e. days beyond the 120-day limit.
Please note: Zero grant periods are included in your Erasmus+ stay and count towards your total available Erasmus period of 12 months per study phase.
Additional support for students with fewer opportunities
Erasmus+ aims to promote equal opportunities and inclusion. For this reason, access to the programme is made easier for students and staff members from disadvantaged backgrounds and with special needs.
In Germany, several groups are defined as students with fewer opportunities within the Erasmus+ programme. Please see the list below.
Erasmus+ offers specific options that operate at various levels. In addition to the standard Erasmus+ funding, there is therefore supplementary funding in the form of a top-up of €250 per month.
Applications for the top-up grant must be submitted together with the Grant Agreement. You will receive all the relevant information regarding the Grant Agreement after the application deadline, provided your application is successful.
The top-up for students with fewer opportunities is paid only once, even if several of the following criteria apply.
If costs are particularly high, a grant may be applied for; in this case students can submit a so-called ‘real cost application‘ (see below).
- Working students are students who work to support themselves or to fund their studies.
- Working students must give up a job in order to undertake a period of study abroad, provided that they have worked continuously for at least six months during the 12-month period prior to the start of the semester abroad and have earned an average net monthly income of between €450 and €850.
- Termination of employment is not a prerequisite for receiving the top-up; the employment contract may also be put on hold.
- The work will not continue during the period abroad; dual-study students will not receive any remuneration during this period.
- Generally, the following are excluded from gainful employment: self-employed work, compulsory work placements and career-integrated dual study programmes that provide a fixed salary.
- Proof must be provided by filling out the Grant Agreement, form sheet Working Students (available in German only) together with the relevant payslips.
- Please note: Outgoing students may only apply for this top-up until winter semester 2026/27 (for UK: summer semester 2026). From summer semester 2027 the financial support for working students within the funding for students with fewer opportunities is no longer available at Hochschule München.
- Students whose parents or single parent do not hold a degree from a university or university of applied sciences, or a comparable qualification (such as from a vocational academy (Berufsakademie)), may apply for this top-up.
- You can usually check whether a qualification is recognised as an academic degree on the HRK’s Hochschulkompass website or on the website of the German Accreditation Council.
- Degrees obtained by a parent in another country that are not recognised as such in Germany are regarded as academic qualifications for the purposes of the eligibility criteria, meaning that there is no entitlement to additional funding.
- You can apply for this top-up within the Grant Agreement, where you can state your parents' degree(s).
- Students who undertake their mobility programme with a child or children and take at least one child with them for the entire duration of their stay are eligible for a top-up, regardless of the number of children.
- If both parents are going abroad, parents of one child cannot apply for double founding. If both parents are taking two or more children with them, both may receive a grant.
- The testimonial report (Appendix F) should address the specific aspects of a stay abroad with one child or more children.
- You can apply for this top-up within the Grant Agreement; please also submit the birth certificate(s) as well as travel documents.
Students with a chronic illness can apply for the top-up grant if additional financial costs arise during their time abroad as a result of their chronic illness.
You can apply for this top-up within the Grant Agreement. Please also submit a medical certificate, which confirms that additional financial costs arise due to the chronic illness.
- Students with a degree of disability of 20% or more, or with a documented disability that results in additional financial needs, may also apply for the top-up if their disability results in additional financial needs whilst abroad.
- Please apply for this top-up within the Grant Agreement and also submit a copy of your disabled person's pass or medical certificate.
- The testimonial report (Appendix F) should address the specific aspects of living with a disability.
Do you require accessible (barrier-free) accommodation, assistance with travel, medical care abroad, adapted learning materials, a support person, etc.?
Students may be eligible for additional funding ('real cost application') if they...
• have a degree of disability of at least 20%
• have a chronic condition that results in additional financial needs whilst abroad
• are undertaking their mobility programme with their child(ren)
The maximum amount of additional funding is €15,000 per term and €30,000 per year.
Further information on applying for additional financial support (real cost application):
As this can be a rather lengthy process depending on individual circumstances, it is important to discuss and clarify the eligibility criteria and the necessary supporting documents required to receive funding with the Institutional Erasmus+ Coordinator at the International Office at an early stage.
If students are eligible to apply for additional financial support, they can complete the comparison or cost calculator together with their university. Please note that proof of the amount of the costs and, where applicable, a statement explaining the necessity of the items applied for must be provided. The supporting documents should be compiled into a single document (see template for attachments) and sent to the Institutional Erasmus+ Coordinator, who will then submit them online to the Nationale Agentur für Erasmus+ Hochschulzusammenarbeit (NA DAAD) for a preliminary review.
Hochschule München will then send the completed application by post to the Nationale Agentur für Erasmus+ Hochschulzusammenarbeit (NA DAAD) two months before the start of the mobility period.
Funding via top-ups and real cost application can be combined provided students meet two different criteria for receiving the top-up and for receiving funding for real costs (for example, a top-up for working students and, in addition, funding for real costs for students with a disability); or, where only one criterion applies, provided it can be ruled out that the same costs are covered by either the top-up or the real cost application.
At Hochschule München, the Student Advice Centre and the Officer for Students with Disabilities or Chronic Illnesses are also on hand to help with any questions you may have about your studies.
Further information is available on the DAAD website.
