Funding opportunities – PROMOS
Information about the PROMOS scholarship
PROMOS
The PROMOS scholarship scheme (Programme for the Mobility of Students from German Universities) provides funding for study periods in non-EU countries, in form of a partial scholarship covering several months. Below you can find detailed information on eligibility, the application process and more.
Please note that some of the documents and resources mentioned below are available in German only.
Detailed information
Studies (at the host university) as part of an exchange programme at a partner university outside the EU
Type of funding
- Partial scholarship for a stay of up to 5 months (funding rates for 2025)
Please note: We are unable to cover (even a portion of) your tuition fees!
Compatibility with funding from outside HM
Can be combined with:
- BAföG for studying abroad (the PROMOS scholarship must be declared and will be partially taken into account)
- Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship)
- Scholarship from a private foundation
It is not possible to claim PROMOS in combination with:
- Funding through the Erasmus+ programme
- DAAD Individual Scholarship (e.g. HAW.International)
- Grants from funding bodies that are financed from German public funds and pursue the same funding objectives
Persons with German citizenship, as well as persons who enjoy equality with Germans under Section 8(1)(2), (2a) and (3) of the Federal Students Assistance Act (BAföG), and non-German students, provided they are enrolled on a degree programme at a German higher education institution with the aim of obtaining a degree from that institution (stays in their home countries are, however, excluded).
Funding can only be approved once per degree cycle (bachelor's degree, master's degree). A purely online semester at partner universities, without an on-site stay, is not eligible for funding. If you have already received PROMOS funding from Hochschule München for a previous stay, you cannot submit a further application.
If a PROMOS scholarship is not taken up because the student does not commence their period of study abroad, it cannot be carried over to a later semester.
Applications for PROMOS are made as part of the application process for a semester abroad. In the relevant online form, under the ‘Funding’ section ("Förderung"), you will find the option to apply for PROMOS. A separate application process is not required.
The application periods for the semester abroad for non-EU students are as follows:
Winter term: 1 October to 1 December
Summer term: 1 May to 1 July
- academic record to date (grade point average, progress of studies)
- motivation and sense of purpose in relation to your studies to date
- social and academic engagement
- language proficiency, i.e. proven command of the national language or the teaching language
Within four weeks of returning from your semester abroad, you must submit a report on your PROMOS-funded studies abroad to the International Office. Guidance on how to write the report can be found here.
