Study abroad in Europe – application process and documents

Application requirements and criteria

  • To take part in the Erasmus+ programme, you must be studying at one of our partner universities . Ideally, you should choose a partner university within your own department. Students on engineering degree programmes may also study at certain partner universities outside their own department (so-called ‘Engineering Cross Over’).
  • Students must have completed at least 2 semesters (BA) or 1 semester (MA); in other words, an exchange is possible from the 3rd semester (BA) or the 2nd semester (MA) onwards.
  • The minimum length of stay is at least 2 months (60 days). Each month of the calendar year is counted as 30 days.
  • Regardless of the type and number of Erasmus+ stays abroad, you are eligible for funding for up to 12 months in total per study cycle (bachelor's degree/master's degree):
    - 12 months during the first study cycle (bachelor's degree or equivalent), including graduate internships
    - 12 months in the second study cycle (master's degree or equivalent), including postgraduate internships
    - For single-cycle degree programmes (e.g. ‘old’ Diplom programmes), the total duration of Erasmus+ funding is 24 months
  • You should have sufficient proficiency in the teaching language. In northern Europe, you can generally expect lessons to be taught in English. In southern Europe, it is more likely that lessons will be taught in the local language. You can find more information on language proficiency and proof of language proficiency underlanguage
  • You must pass at least 15 ECTS credits during your Erasmus+ semester abroad. However, this does not only include subject-specific courses but also non-subject-specific courses and language courses. It is, of course, also possible to take courses and modules totalling more than 15 ECTS credits.

  • academic achievements and progress throughout the student's study time
  • sufficient language skills
  • motivation

Application process

  • Erasmus+ and Swiss places at partner universities are allocated by your departmental coordinator of your department.
  • Departmental coordinators are professors or staff members at your department. They maintain cooperations with partner universities and provide support with academic matters (e.g. course selection).
  • You can find the relevant departmental coordinators in the list of the different department'spartner universities.

  • Places are allocated (nomination) by the departmental coordinator by adding the respective students to the nomination list.

  • Once your departmental coordinator has approved your application – i.e. has nominated you – you can submit your application documents to the International Office.
  • Students from Departments 01–09 and 11–13 may, as a rule, only submit an application for one partner university via the IO. Once you have been nominated by the departmental coordinator, your place at the partner university is reserved for you.

Nomination = selection by the departmental coordinator

The listing and recognition of courses (subject to approval by the chair of the examination board) takes place following a successful application via the international officer and nomination at the partner university via a digital Learning Agreement form. Further information is available in the mandatory online information session for all selected Erasmus+ outbound students, which will take place in April or October, as well as in the Erasmus+ Outgoing Moodle course, which will be available at that time. You will be informed of the exact date for the mandatory session shortly after submitting your application.
