Career

Stephan Rether studied Communication Design at Munich University of Applied Sciences. In 2013, he co-founded the animation studio and YouTube channel of the same name, ‘Kurzgesagt’, which specialises in science communication and information design. Until 2016, he was part of the management team there and served as Head of Motion Design; he remains involved in some productions to this day. In 2014, he founded the music publishing company “Bumm Clack”, with his work focusing on the interplay between the musical and visual worlds. As an interdisciplinary designer, he has been supporting various clients from the scientific and pop culture sectors since 2016.


In addition to motion design and science communication, his work centres on the conception and production of social media content. His work has been recognised with awards including the Information is Beautiful Award, the DDC Good Design Award (Gold, Moving Image) and the Spark Design Award.


In the 2023/24 winter semester, he was appointed Professor of Knowledge Transfer through Motion Design and Animation at the Faculty of Design at Munich University of Applied Sciences. In addition to teaching courses on the fundamentals of animation, he runs projects focusing on the conception and production of knowledge-sharing content and formats.
