Research topics at HM

Applied natural sciences are an important and wide-ranging field of research at HM. Below, we present two areas of research excellence.

The joint research initiative in the field of photonics focuses on ultra-short-pulse lasers, sensor technology and multiphoton microscopes.

In biomedical engineering, the focus is on understanding the structure-function relationships in healthy and diseased tissue.

Through our research, we aim to help address societal challenges and actively support sustainable development.

A key area of research at HM has long been the issue of resource conservation in the construction industry. In order to explore energy-saving potential for the energy transition, research must be carried out into sustainable energy supply and resource-efficient energy use. Furthermore, integrated and sustainable overall optimisations must be developed in the field of building services engineering. For HM, sustainability as a research topic also means focusing on societal transformation processes in order to explore the prerequisites for a sustainable, smart and resilient society. For example, research is being conducted into how sustainable tourism can be achieved or how new forms of work (‘New Work’) can be organised in everyday working life.

The social, epidemiological and demographic changes taking place in our society raise a host of questions that have so far received only inadequate answers. The increasingly complex structures of modern societies demand a more nuanced perspective on long-standing phenomena and a growing awareness of new forms of disadvantage. Key research needs, for example in gerontology, social participation in social work or within migration research, are identified in order to help shape processes of social change constructively and successfully.

The research topic of "machine learning" focuses on modelling and development methods, as well as technology suites, to support innovative applications and explore new, intelligent solutions. Research is being conducted into, amongst other things, connected intelligent transport systems, new solutions in robotics (e.g. assistive robots) and decision support for complex problems. Research is being conducted into autonomous flight at our Aerospace Flight Test Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen, amongst other areas. Remote sensing data is also being used to investigate vegetation structures in forestry and damage caused by natural disasters. The scientists are driving the development of core AI competencies and supporting research and technology transfer.
