Research collaborations
Hochschule München offers a wide-ranging research landscape – spanning the fields of technology, business, social sciences and design – and is firmly rooted in the Munich metropolitan region as a driving force for progress and innovation. Drawing on our experience and the scientific expertise of our researchers, we conduct responsible and applied research and work with you through various forms of collaboration – whether through public funding programmes (federal, state, EU, International) or private sector funding – to develop practically-oriented solutions to societal challenges.

Federal and state funding schemes
The funding programmes of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and research funding from the federal and state governments form the main pillars of national and regional research funding. At HM, this ranges from innovation funding in collaboration with commercial enterprises to knowledge-driven research in future-oriented fields.
European research
Horizon Europe is the EU Framework Programme for Research and Development for the period 2021 to 2027. Its aim is to build a knowledge- and innovation-based society and a competitive economy, and to contribute to sustainable development. Numerous funding schemes offer the opportunity to conduct research within European consortia to address global challenges and strengthen Europe’s industrial competitiveness.
Furthermore, as part of EU structural funding, Interreg programmes promote cross-border cooperation in various geographical programme areas. Various national funding bodies such as the BMBF, DFG and BayFOR also offer opportunities for smaller-scale, bilateral collaborations and project initiation activities.

Contract research
There are various forms of contract research. For example, where established knowledge is used exclusively for a project on behalf of third parties, such as in routine investigations, service measurements or material testing. This involves the application of established findings.
Student projects are a special form of contract research. This refers to situations where third parties help to shape projects carried out as part of the curriculum by providing funding and setting the research topics.

Charities
A large number of foundations across the country are involved in funding research. In many cases, the selection or approval of applications is subject to the objectives and statutes of the respective foundations. The funding provided may cover either research projects or human resources costs. For example, so-called endowed professorships or posts for academic staff – usually PhD positions – are established in this way.
