Knowledge and technology transfer
Research-based knowledge transfer is a two-way process. It involves applying knowledge in collaboration with practitioners, thereby helping to develop new products and services whilst also playing a positive role in shaping societal development.
Publications
The professors and research staff members at Hochschule München publish on a wide variety of topics. They receive support, for example, in the form of the university covering publication fees for articles in pure (gold) open-access journals or as part of a doctorate programme. Support during the doctorate is not limited to open access. Furthermore, courses and seminars on academic publishing are offered on an ongoing basis as part of the doctorate programme.
Patents
Inventions at Hochschule München are generally the result of contract research, collaborative research or the original ideas of professors, research staff members and students.
The Patent Office at Hochschule München records and processes invention disclosures. It advises and supports inventors throughout the entire patent process – from the submission of the invention disclosure right through to the potential exploitation and marketing of the patent.

Start-ups and entrepreneurship
The Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship (SCE) is responsible for entrepreneurship activities within HM and works in close consultation with the university management and across faculties with the institution’s diverse range of stakeholders.
Awards
HM’s Oskar von Miller Prize
Oskar von Miller is best known in Munich as the founder of the Deutsches Museum. He was also a pioneer and early advocate of a versatile and practice-oriented education. Hochschule München is committed to this approach to application-oriented academic education and, once a year at a ceremony, honours outstanding achievements by awarding the “Oskar von Miller Prize” in the following categories:
"Excellent doctorates", "Applied research", "Quality in Teaching", "Excellent degree outcomes" and "Partner to the professional world".

Networks and partnerships
Hochschule München has partnerships with other universities, non-university research institutions, companies and organisations to support and promote academic projects.
Munich University of Applied Sciences is part of the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS7), which specifically supports research projects with an international focus.
Furthermore, HM is one of three universities in the INUAS network, which focuses on issues relating to urban and regional quality of life.
As a member of the ORCID Germany Consortium, HM advocates the use of a globally established standard for author identification that is recommended or required by research policy bodies and publishers.
Advisory Board for Research, Development and Innovation
The Advisory Board for Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) advises the management of Hochschule München on strategic issues relating to research, knowledge and technology transfer, and innovation.
The R&D&I Advisory Board replaces the Advisory Board for Research and Development at Hochschule München, which was established back in 2009. In its 2018 University Development Plan, Hochschule München commits to research, development and transfers – in other words, activities that have a targeted impact on business and society. This made further development necessary.
As part of the university’s strategic development, existing structures and concepts are regularly evaluated and consistently refined. In this context, input and advice from external experts from the business and wider community, with diverse backgrounds and experience, are of great importance with regard to the university’s strategic priorities.
