Nursing Treasures PAZP 2 – Co-design and evidence-based approaches to identifying nursing innovations

The interdisciplinary ‘Pflegeschätze’ project investigates the experiential knowledge of family carers. HM developed multi-method, participatory and co-creative methods, as well as criteria for a digital platform for solution-oriented peer support. In a multicentre study involving over 300 participants, gender-specific effects on quality of life and health were statistically demonstrated. Peer facilitators were trained using an innovative online learning approach.

Algele Qua – Age-appropriate and healthy living in the neighbourhood

How can healthy ageing be achieved within a neighbourhood – and how can neighbourhood-based initiatives also reach older people who have so far benefited little from existing services and who face intersectional challenges? Algele Qua is investigating this in both urban and rural areas across Bavaria, using interviews, focus groups and network maps, as well as participatory methods such as Photovoice, mapping exercises and neighbourhood walks, which were selected in consultation with practitioners.

AutPeer – Peer counselling/peer counsellors at the contact and counselling centres of the Autism Competence Centres (counselling centres) in Bavaria

AutPeer is developing a framework to establish peer counselling by people on the autism spectrum as a standard practice in Bavaria’s autism competence centres. Autistic peers share their experiential knowledge as experts in their own right, on an equal footing. Developed through a participatory process, the framework comprises a functional description, a competence profile, a training curriculum and recommendations for integration – to promote greater participation, self-determination and improved quality of support.

Its aim is to use Applied Research to lay the foundations for a sustainable, socially just and resilient society.

Guided by the motto ‘Life in Motion’, this inter-faculty institute adopts a holistic approach that brings together technology, design and people. Future research topics include, amongst other things, autonomous mobility and reliability through intelligent systems.

CENERGIE develops comprehensive solutions for future buildings in the context of the energy transition. On the one hand, the focus is on the research and development of new engineering tools for planning and forward-looking operational management strategies. At the same time, pilot and development projects in the field of heating, cooling, electricity generation and storage are being driven forward. In doing so, the company works with sustainable and efficient architectural concepts.

The Institute for Material and Building Research was established in July 2019 as one of the first research institutes at Hochschule München and represents the departments of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Its focus is on the long-term preservation and sustainable development of the building and infrastructure stock. Future research topics include, amongst other things, the service life of materials, structures and buildings, resource efficiency and life-cycle assessments, as well as reliability and safety.

HM’s Oskar von Miller Award

Oskar von Miller is best known in Munich as the founder of the Deutsches Museum. Furthermore, he was a pioneer and early advocate of a versatile and practice-oriented education. Munich University of Applied Sciences is committed to this approach to application-oriented academic education and, once a year at a ceremony, recognises outstanding achievements and awards the Oskar in the following categories: “Outstanding Doctorate”, “Applied Research”, “Quality in Teaching”, “Outstanding Graduation Theses” and “Industry Partners”.

Here we present the awards in the categories ‘Outstanding Doctorate’ and ‘Applied Research’:

2026 'Oskar' Award winner

Prof. Dr. phil. Markus Witzmann has been awarded the Oskar von Miller Award for ‘Applied Research’ by Hochschule München. The criterion for the award is outreach – research for and with people, as demonstrated by the wide range of target groups involved in the research projects. The prize-winner impressed the jury with the breadth of the groups involved – ranging from those directly affected, their relatives and service providers to political stakeholders – across a wide variety of projects.

Witzmann is a Professor of nursing science specialising in evidence-based nursing. His core areas of expertise include participatory research, nursing science and ethics, the management of social and healthcare organisations, and the rehabilitation and social inclusion of people with mental health conditions.

His aim is to optimise support services for vulnerable people and to improve their quality of life. His research also takes into account the people and organisations involved in providing care. He attaches great importance to incorporating research findings into teaching and course timetables.

"Oskar for Applied Research"

All ‘Applied Research’ awards

Dr Maximilian Spellauge has been awarded the ‘Oskar’ by Hochschule München for his outstanding doctoral thesis. The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr Heinz Huber in collaboration with Prof. habil. Dr.-Ing. Barcikowski (University of Duisburg-Essen).

The focus is on the use of ultrashort laser pulses to produce nanoparticles, which are used, for example, in catalysis or in the production of green hydrogen. Using newly developed methods, Spellauge succeeded for the first time in investigating the underlying processes at high temporal resolution and in revealing key physical mechanisms. The work thus fills an important gap in research and lays the foundations for more efficient and targeted production processes.

Furthermore, whilst working on his doctorate, he was heavily involved in teaching and in recruiting young talent. His numerous publications in international journals and papers presented at conferences significantly enhanced the department’s visibility in the long term.
