Administration and editorial team
For administrative and editorial purposes, role-based and personal identifiers are created with access control mechanisms, and any changes made using these identifiers are logged.
Log files
Visits to the Hochschule München website are logged and stored in a file. With the exception of the IP address, the data stored is not personally identifiable. After 7 days at the latest, only the first two bytes of the IP address are retained.
The following data is stored in the log file:
- Name of the file retrieved
- Date and time of access
- Notification as to whether access was successful
- IP address (truncated after 7 days)
- The website from which the file was accessed
- Access status (e.g. file transferred, file not found)
- the web browser and screen resolution used, as well as the operating system used
- amount of data transferred
This stored data is used solely for security purposes (in the event of attacks) and to improve our website, and is not passed on to third parties for either commercial or non-commercial purposes.
No attempt is made to trace the data back to individual users in the context of usage statistics.
Cookies
So-called cookies are used on the centrally hosted websites of Hochschule München (main website, departments, departments), for example to compile access statistics. Cookies are small text files that are stored on website visitors’ computers by their web browsers. By adjusting the relevant settings in your web browser, you can disable the storage of cookies and delete any cookies that have already been stored.
You can manage the cookies set by the Hochschule München website here:
JavaScript
JavaScript is used for certain features, such as the automatic switch to a mobile website view, or certain search functions.
JavaScript must be enabled in your web browser to use these features.
However, the relevant information on the websites is generally accessible even without JavaScript.
Usage statistics using cookies
The statistics software Matomo (www.matomo.org, formerly PIWIK), which is operated by Hochschule München on its in-house servers, is used for the statistical analysis of the centrally hosted websites. Matomo uses cookies for usage analysis. However, every visitor can disable the statistical tracking of their visit by Matomo (using the ‘Do Not Track’ setting in their browser or by explicitly disabling tracking via the Cookie Consent Management tool).
These analyses enable the compilation of usage statistics, which allow Hochschule München to continuously improve the information it provides.
Within this framework, usage information – including the IP address of the accessing computer, which is truncated for data protection reasons – is transmitted and stored for analytical purposes. Truncating the IP address ensures that the website user remains anonymous. Only a ‘session ID’ (cookie) is tracked and stored as a unique identifier for a visit to the site. A “session” ends when the web browser is closed.
The information used for usage analysis relating to website access also includes the date, time, location (town), browser type, abilities and language, operating system/device type, duration of the website visit, visits by server and local time, pages visited, usage history, search engine used and search terms used to access the university’s websites, and URLs referring to the university’s websites.
Disabling tracking causes a so-called opt-out cookie to be created in the web browser, which ensures that Matomo no longer collects usage data for this visit to the website. Please note: If the user deletes this opt-out cookie in their web browser settings, the collection of statistical data by Matomo will be reactivated.
The statistical data generated by visits to the website is used exclusively by Hochschule München to improve its online services and ensure that resources are used as effectively as possible.
Embedding YouTube videos
Videos from the external video platform YouTube are embedded on the Hochschule München website. Hochschule München values the communication opportunities offered by social media, for example when making videos available. However, it would like to point out that simply clicking the play button on a video may result in the transfer of personal data.
This is regardless of whether or not the user is a member of the social network. Technically, this data could be used to create a personalised profile.
Hochschule München has no control over the processes that are triggered. By clicking the play button, users leave the area controlled and managed by Hochschule München. Users should always take note of the providers’ privacy policies and settings.
YouTube is a service provided by YouTube LLC, 901 Cherry Ave., San Bruno, CA 94066, USA, a subsidiary of Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, California 94043, USA. Users can find further information on the purpose and scope of data processing (including outside the European Union and outside the USA), as well as details of privacy settings, in the Privacy Policy. Google processes personal data in the USA, amongst other places, and has opted into the EU-US Privacy Shield.
Rights of those affected

- Where the legal conditions are met, data subjects may request the erasure or restriction of processing (Articles 17 and 18 of the GDPR).

- Data subjects have the right to withdraw their consent under data protection law at any time. Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out on the basis of that consent prior to its withdrawal (Article 7 of the GDPR).
- Data subjects have the right to request information as to whether automated decision-making, including profiling, is taking place (Article 22 of the GDPR).
- Data subjects have the right to object at any time to the processing of their data on grounds relating to their particular situation, where the processing is carried out solely on the basis of Article 6(1)(e) or (f) of the GDPR (Article 21(1), first sentence, of the GDPR).
Should the rights set out above be exercised, the public authority will check whether the legal requirements for doing so have been met.
Furthermore, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. The authority responsible for Hochschule München is the Bavarian State Commissioner for Data Protection.
