BayWiss Joint Research Programme on Infrastructure, Construction and Urbanisation
The BayWISS Joint Research Programme “Infrastructure, Construction and Urbanisation” brings together researchers across different types of higher education institutions in Bavaria and offers graduates in engineering, the natural sciences, sociology and economics a structured pathway to a doctorate.
As part of the ‘Joint Doctoral Programme’ expert forum, the Bavarian Science Forum – which serves as a platform for cooperation between all 30 universities of applied sciences and universities in Bavaria – has established subject-specific doctoral programmes in which Professors from universities of applied sciences and universities jointly supervise doctoral candidates. A key objective of these joint doctoral programmes is to improve doctoral conditions for young researchers and to enhance the permeability of our education system.
The BayWISS Joint Research Centre “Infrastructure, Construction and Urbanisation” was established in August 2018. The sponsoring universities are the Technical University of Munich, the East Bavarian Technical University of Regensburg, the University of the German Armed Forces in Munich and the University of Applied Sciences München, with the latter two institutions also serving as the host universities for the Joint Research Centre.
This interdisciplinary research group offers graduates – primarily from the engineering disciplines, but also from the natural sciences, sociology and economics – a network characterised by a diversity of research approaches and methods, whilst also providing a structured pathway to a doctorate.
Under the umbrella of the ‘Infrastructure, Construction and Urbanisation’ research network, doctoral projects are supervised whose content falls within the thematic areas listed below.
- Materials and structural engineering research
design and construction; maintenance and repair; building materials science (concrete, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and masonry); and glass and façade construction. - Energy efficiency and sustainability
of building materials (e.g. recyclability), structures and buildings, as well as infrastructure and urban neighbourhoods. - Urbanisation processes and the future of infrastructure
climate protection and adaptation to climate change, land-use efficiency, water supply and wastewater disposal, and flood prevention. - Cross-cutting themes
technology assessment, risk assessment, safety and accompanying social science research.
In addition to their individual research work, doctoral candidates at the BayWISS Joint Doctoral Programme receive research- and career-related training and supervision. Doctoral candidates who are members of the programme can, on the one hand, take part in subject-specific and interdisciplinary courses running alongside their doctoral studies, which are tailored to their specific needs. Furthermore, doctoral candidates receive financial support for attending specialist conferences, publishing papers, making purchases specific to their doctoral projects, and undertaking career-enhancing training. In addition, regular networking events provide opportunities to establish contacts and to present and discuss research findings.
