Prof. Dr. Christine Maria Greif wins the ‘Owl of Wisdom’ award
Exciting science slams at the Applied Science Slam Vol. 9 at Hochschule München
24/04/2024
Twice a year, Hochschule München invites the public to its main lecture theatre at Lothstraße 34: at the Applied Science Slam, slammers can take to the stage to present science and research to the audience in an entertaining way. The popular professor duo Michael Sachs and Georg Eggers hosted the evening with songs they had written themselves and their humorous presentation style. Singer Stefan Noelle performed as the musical act. With her slam on astrophysics, Prof. Dr. Christine Maria Greif was crowned the winner of the evening by the audience with thunderous applause.
When entertainment meets
science The four participants proved with their slams that science doesn’t have to be boring. First up was Christine Maria Greif, a professor specialising in astrophysics at the Department of Technical Systems, Processes and Communication. In her slam, she explained research into stars using witty analogies with babies. Felix Dominsky, a Master’s student at the Max Planck Institute for Physics, stayed within the vastness of the cosmos and performed a slam on dark matter and astroparticle physics.
Following the musical interlude and a break, Professor Michael Hofmann from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle and Aerospace Engineering took to the stage. His humorous way of explaining magnetic fields to the audience drew plenty of laughter and loud applause. The event concluded with Jürgen Bluhm, a lecturer at the Department of Tourism, who delivered a slam on eye-tracking research.
The ‘applause meter’ decides
The guests are the jury – that’s the rule. The ‘applause meter’ measures and evaluates the volume of the applause for each slam. With thunderous applause and a clear lead, the audience crowned Prof. Dr. Christine Maria Greif the winner of the evening – she triumphed at the HM’s ninth Science Battle and took home the ‘Owl of Wisdom’ trophy.
Highlights of the slam are now available to watch on the HM YouTube channel. The slam performances themselves will also be available there shortly.
