Dirk Henrici wins the ‘Owl of Wisdom’ award
Science meets the stage at the 11th Applied Science Slam
29/04/2025
Just under 300 guests were keen to experience science in a different way: at the 11th Applied Science Slam, researchers and students from HM, amongst others, presented their topics in an entertaining way – using humour, props and vivid examples. The rules: ten minutes per entry, props are allowed, and at the end, the applause decides the winner.
Mental health, procrastination and a kebab model
Four slam entries competed for the HM’s red ‘Owl of Wisdom’: science journalist Wolfgang Goede kicked things off with a mental health slam. He presented methods students can use to cope with mental health challenges. HM Professor Dirk Henrici from the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics then took a humorous look at students’ time management – including pointed examples of procrastination. Students Philipp Strasswender, Felizia Creutzburg and James Clark, who are involved in the Plant-Based Universities initiative, promoted a plant-based diet in the canteen through a role-play. The evening concluded with Markus Zimmerer, who demonstrated how even buying a kebab – from ordering to paying – can be turned into an optimisable process chain, thereby making material flow simulation easy to understand in the process.
An evening met with much applause HM professors Georg Eggers and Michael Sachs hosted the evening with their usual humour and musical accompaniment. Vocal pianist Ramon Bessel rounded off the musical programme.
At the end, the audience voted loudly on the entertainment value of the slammers. HM Professor Dirk Henrici was crowned the winner of the evening to thunderous applause and took home the ‘Owl of Wisdom’ from the HM C-Lab’s 3D printer. Refreshments were once again provided by the Friends of Hochschule München e.V., whose commitment also benefits other events at HM. The next Applied Science Slam will take place in the winter semester.
