University-wide environmental guidelines adopted
HM is committed to taking action as part of its sustainability strategy
20/10/2026
Since September 2025, the departments at the Pasing Campus and in the ‘Roter Würfel’ on the Lothstraße Campus have been taking part in the ‘Ökoprofit’ programme run by the City of Munich. The aim of the programme is to examine processes relevant to the environment and, on that basis, to devise and implement measures for more environmentally friendly operations.
Environmental guidelines as a concrete basis for action
As part of the Ökoprofit project, the project teams drew up environmental guidelines in consultation with the relevant HM departments. These guidelines serve as a framework to guide HM’s efforts to become more environmentally friendly and sustainable. The environmental guidelines apply with immediate effect across the whole of HM; they have been approved by the university management and are published on the HM website
.
An overview of specific measures
The environmental guidelines are divided into nine key areas, such as environmental management, mobility and biodiversity. Within these areas, HM sets out how it will reduce its resource consumption, encourage students and staff to get involved, and communicate its progress transparently. Compliance with environmental legislation and occupational health and safety standards are also enshrined in the guidelines.
Specifically, for example, direct emissions are to be reduced by at least 80 per cent by 2030 and the university aims to be virtually greenhouse gas-neutral by 2040. In its procurement, the university gives preference to reusable and recycled products as well as regional goods; in the area of mobility, plans include improving the infrastructure for cycling. To enhance biodiversity on the campus, partnerships with nature conservation organisations are planned.
