New & Appointed
Name: Christian Murphy
Professor of: Geodata Management
I’m from: Rochdale (near Manchester, UK); I completed my studies at the Technical University of Hanover and completed my doctorate at the Technical University of Munich
Previously, I worked as: After several years in the public sector and at an engineering firm, I most recently held a postdoctoral position at the Technical University of Munich.
My area of expertise in a word ...
... and my motivation for teaching there:
Geodata management!
Geodata can be used to investigate the world’s big questions: whether they concern climate change, social inequalities or the development of smart cities. However, it all depends on how geodata is structured, analysed and presented. Geographical phenomena require bespoke algorithms that go beyond pure statistics, as the spatial context is highly specific. Stochastic assumptions – such as the idea that the population might be evenly distributed – are fundamentally flawed.
My highlight of the year
The appeal to the HM
My leisure tip
Are puppet shows just for children? Not at all! You can enjoy an entertaining Thursday evening at the Kleines Spiel puppet theatre in Munich. My favourite production is *Macbeth*.
