How much do I earn as a professor at HM?
As a professor at HM, you may receive a location allowance and a family allowance, as well as additional performance-related pay, on top of your basic salary. As a rule, you will be a civil servant and therefore do not pay contributions to the statutory social security scheme. You are entitled to a health allowance and take out supplementary private health and long-term care insurance. Secondary employment is permitted and encouraged. Basic salary
Professors at the HM are placed in pay grade W2. This means that their basic salary is …
Grade 1 (= from the start of service): 6,824.23 euros
Grade 2 (= after 5 years): 7,094.18 euros
Grade 3 (= after a further 7 years): 7,499.05 euros
+ Location and family allowance
In addition, there is the location and family allowance. This depends on your main place of residence (location categories/rent bands in accordance with Section 12 of the Housing Benefit Act) and your family circumstances.
+ Performance-related pay
If you are appointed to the HM, you may be entitled to a monthly appointment allowance for an indefinite period.
The following additional allowances may be granted:
- A special monthly allowance for work carried out beyond the scope of your official duties in the fields of research, teaching, the arts, further education or the promotion of young talent.
- One-off payments for special tasks and/or outstanding achievements.
- Remuneration for roles or specific duties within university self-governance or university management.

Becoming a civil servant also brings financial benefits
Professors at the HM are generally civil servants. They do not pay contributions towards statutory unemployment and pension insurance. In addition to the state allowance, they take out private health and long-term care insurance. They are also well provided for in retirement. It is possible to become a civil servant up until the age of 52.
Secondary employment is encouraged
Secondary employment is permitted and encouraged, as it helps you to keep your professional knowledge up to date. For example, you can write expert reports, deliver training courses in the business sector, or even run your own start-up.
