The BraWo Project
Bringing students’ needs and desires closer together
Following the pandemic-driven surge in digitalisation, many students now appreciate being able to study without having to be on campus, as well as the availability of lecture recordings. Accordingly, they would like these options to remain in place even after the pandemic. At the same time, as lecturers, we observe that not all students are able to use these more flexible options to achieve a level of personal learning progress comparable to the learning outcomes achieved in pre-pandemic blended learning. Before new habits – and thus de facto standards for teaching and learning in the post-pandemic era – become established, there is a need to better reconcile what students want with what they actually need for their personal learning success.
The aim of the project was, on the one hand, to raise students’ awareness of active learning, including in virtual environments, and, on the other hand, to support this through initiatives that address both students’ aspirations and their needs.
On the one hand, the project gave lecturers a clearer understanding of what appeals to students and of ways to engage them in a manner appropriate to their target group and tailored to their needs. On the other hand, students improved their capacity for self-reflection and developed an awareness of active learning as the basis for a responsible, self-directed learning process.
