Designing spaces for the campus of the future
“Quiet rooms are important for a variety of reasons, such as inclusion, freedom of religion and work-life balance. They send a strong signal that the university values these things.” (student staff member)
The campus of the future is not just about redesigned spaces or state-of-the-art technology. It also includes places that offer all members of the university community a place to retreat to amid the stresses of everyday university life. The creation of such spaces at Hochschule München is an initiative that was put forward by the students themselves. This includes the further development of the ‘Room of Silence’ on the Pasing Campus.
The space has been in use since the end of 2023 in the L-Building on the Pasing Campus. To further develop the space, the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education, in collaboration with the HM Business School and the Department of Applied Social Sciences, conducted a survey among students, lecturers and staff members in May 2024.
The survey was conducted as part of the "NEO – Campus der Zukunft" project.
- Involving students in the design of the space to encourage student participation
- Find out how students, lecturers and staff members would like to use the space
- Find out which items of furniture they would like
- A total of 199 people took part in the survey.
- The issue is considered important.
- Purpose of the room:
- A refuge from external stimuli (n = 101)
- for general relaxation (n = 92)
- used for devotions or prayer (n = 77)
- It is important to raise awareness of the room, as many people (n = 88) had not previously heard of the quiet room on the Pasing Campus
- Key equipment:
- Equipment designed to eliminate sources of noise
- comfortable seating or lounging options
- a room divider
The results of the survey were passed on to the two departments for further action. The next step will see the departments working together with the students to put the results into practice.
