Tips for preparing for a job interview
The preparation
Congratulations – you’ve cleared the first hurdle and received an invitation to a job interview! You should go into this interview well prepared and focused. This will not only make you feel confident, but you’ll also project that confidence to the people you’re speaking to. This helps to put both parties at ease during the interview.
And remember: first impressions count! From the very first moment, try to make a positive impression by looking well-groomed and coming across as friendly.
Please bear the following points in mind:
- Confirmation of the interview appointment by telephone or email
- Find out which company representatives you will be meeting during the interview
- Now is the time to find out all about the company
- Book a train journey or plan your journey by car (allow plenty of time)
- Choosing the right clothes & styling:
- Clothing and footwear appropriate to the role, and kept clean and tidy
- Don’t go overboard with accessories
- A well-groomed appearance
- Make sure you’re well-rested when you come to your appointment
- Practise reciting your CV (in front of the mirror, in front of friends)
- Familiarise yourself with the job advert, your personal cover letter and your CV
- Think about any questions the company might ask, as well as any questions you might have for the company
- Documents to bring with you (original certificates, documents to be submitted at a later date, and possibly two complete application portfolios)
- Please bring some proper writing materials with you so that you can take notes during the interview if necessary.
