Gender Monitoring Report 2025 published

With the Gender Monitoring 2025, Hochschule München is documenting the quantitative state of equality at the university for the fourth year running. The monitoring exercise records gender ratios amongst students as well as amongst academic and academic support staff members at all hierarchical levels, and presents their development over time series.

The so-called ‘leaky pipeline’ illustrates that, at Hochschule München too, the proportion of women decreases steadily as the level of qualification rises: whilst the proportion of female first-year students in the 2024/25 winter semester stood at 41.3 per cent, the proportion of female professors was 22.6 per cent. The time series also offer interesting insights into developments over recent years: In the 2013 summer semester, the proportion of female students was still 36 per cent, whereas by the 2025 summer semester it had already risen to 40 per cent. The proportion of female first-year students in STEM subjects rose from 23.8 per cent in the 2013/14 winter semester to 31.9 per cent in the 2024/25 winter semester. Similarly, the proportion of female professors rose from 18.9 per cent in 2013 to 24.1 per cent by the end of 2025. In research support roles, the proportion of women stood at 58 per cent in the 2024/25 winter semester. Overall, this shows that Hochschule München is moving towards parity, albeit in small steps.

The regular survey supports the university’s strategic work on equality and is an integral part of the EU’s research funding programmes. It should be noted, however, that gender ratios alone are not the sole measure of equality – what is crucial is the active practice of equality in everyday university life.
