Outstanding Master’s thesis

Concrete, timber and other building materials from existing buildings can continue to be used even after they have been demolished. Tobias Greimel, a student at the Department of Architecture at Hochschule München, investigated how such materials can be integrated into new construction projects in his Master’s thesis: ‘Something ends, something begins – the Transformation of the Treibgut materials initiative into a central depot and campus for circular construction.’

Reusing materials
To this end, Greimel analysed two demolition sites in Munich for their potential for urban mining. The aim is to recover valuable raw materials from existing buildings and reintroduce them into the material cycle.

Campus for circular construction
Based on the materials recovered, Greimel developed the concept for a campus for circular construction at the Kreativlabor. His work thus highlights concrete ways in which the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy in the construction sector can be shaped.

The City of Munich University Prize is worth 5,000 euros. It is awarded annually to one outstanding final assignment from Hochschule München, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Technical University of Munich. To be eligible, the thesis must deal with the urban planning, economic or cultural development of Munich.

The award was presented by the Third Mayor of the State Capital of Munich, Verena Dietl, and the Councillor for Labour and Economic Affairs, Dr. Christian Scharpf, together with Christian Schühle, a Professor at Munich University of Applied Sciences and the Supervisor of the thesis.
