In accordance with Section 48 of the BayHSchG, students at Hochschule München may take a leave of absence on grounds of maternity or parental leave, or to care for relatives.
Applications must be submitted by 14 April of each year for the summer semester and by 31 October of each year for the winter semester.
Please note: Students with family responsibilities may only take a leave of absence due to maternity or parental leave from the second semester onwards. Students can submit the relevant application online via their PRIMUSS account.
Students with family responsibilities may continue to attend lectures and pass exams during their leave of absence. The examination deadlines do not extend. Furthermore, upon application and with the approval of the internship coordinator, it is possible to complete the practical semester over two consecutive semesters.
During a leave of absence, students with family responsibilities are also obliged to pay the basic fee for the Studierendenwerk and the fee for the MVV semester ticket.
Leave of absence due to maternity/parental leave
Parental leave may be taken by one parent alone or by both parents jointly. The leave of absence may be applied for on a semester-by-semester basis or for the entire period (until the child reaches the age of 3).
In accordance with Section 48(4) of the BayHSchG, the period of leave of absence due to maternity and child-rearing is not included in the period of leave of absence for other reasons. This means that students may take a further leave of absence for up to two semesters for other reasons. It is possible, upon application, to transfer up to 12 months of the standard parental leave to the period up to the child’s 8th birthday, thereby, for example, supporting the child’s start at school and the period thereafter.
Please note that students on leave due to maternity protection and parental leave are not entitled to BAföG. Provided the requirements are met, it may be possible to apply for Unemployment Benefit II or social assistance.
