Maternity allowance

All expectant mothers, whether covered by private or statutory health insurance, are entitled to maternity allowance, including students in marginal employment.

Members of the statutory health insurance scheme who are entitled to sick pay (e.g. female employees) receive a daily maternity allowance of 13 euros from their health insurance fund, plus an employer’s contribution equal to the difference between this amount and their average net pay. Members of the statutory health insurance scheme who are not entitled to sick pay (e.g. female students) and are in marginal employment generally receive €13 per day in maternity allowance from their health insurance fund.
Under the statutory health insurance scheme, women covered under a family policy who are in marginal employment receive a one-off maternity allowance of up to €210 from the Federal Insurance Office.
Female employees insured under private health insurance or those without health insurance receive a one-off maternity allowance of up to 210 euros from the Federal Insurance Office, plus an employer’s contribution equal to the difference between 13 euros and the average net pay.

Women whose employment contract was lawfully terminated by their employer during pregnancy receive €13 per day in maternity allowance. The employer’s contribution is paid to these women by their health insurance fund or the Federal Insurance Office.
Maternity allowance is paid 6–8 weeks after the birth.
