Creating NEBourhoods Together – Shaping Neuperlach Together
For more than two years, HM:UniverCity, working in partnership with Kreativ München as a transition hub, has designed, facilitated and coordinated the co-creation processes within the “Creating NEBourhoods Together” project. Under the leadership of the City of Munich and with the involvement of the Technical University of Munich, Hochschule München, UnternehmerTUM, the Munich Architecture Gallery, the Bavarian Research Alliance, the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship, the Munich Society for Urban Regeneration, str.ucture GmbH, Studio Stadt Region, creative professionals and, above all, representatives of associations from Neuperlach, specific locations and initiatives were developed during this period. The aim was to transform Neuperlach into a more sustainable and socially inclusive neighbourhood. Creative professionals from the City of Munich contributed their design expertise to help implement the ideas and projects of the co-creative real-world laboratories.
The results of these two years are remarkable: children and young people have built nesting sites and hiding places for wildlife in the garden of their youth centre, with the aim of making their neighbourhood more biodiverse. Local residents have set up a co-operative to generate electricity collectively: sustainably, fairly and locally. An open-air kitchen, available to borrow free of charge, encourages people to cook together in public spaces.
CHILLspORT, a project involving young people, is a collaboratively designed landscape of structures in the school playground that encourages pupils to relax and exercise, thereby offering alternative ways of using school playgrounds. A large shaded bench with a solar roof provides pupils at Neuperlach School with shelter from the sun, serving as a meeting place and teaching space for a local school, as well as a charging station, all in one.
These and other initiatives have emerged from the co-creative Living Labs, developed in collaboration with local civil society: places that enhance quality of life, that people are proud of, that they wish to preserve, and which, above all, serve as tangible milestones for the collective, sustainable and social development of a neighbourhood. Without co-creation, none of this could have come about! In the handbook *Co-Creation for Urban Development*, HM:UniverCity has set out how to successfully manage these complex multi-stakeholder processes within a multi-stakeholder system and achieve effective results through the co-creative process – results that have the potential to be sustained.
This project was guided by the New European Bauhaus vision, which centres on the principles of ‘Beautiful, Sustainable, Together’ and, in turn, supports the implementation of the EU’s Green Deal. Cities are to be designed to be sustainable, inclusive and attractive.
The ‘Creating NEBourhoods Together’ project, funded by Horizon Europe and coordinated by the City of Munich, ran until March 2025. Many of the projects launched in Neuperlach will be continued in the neighbourhood by local stakeholders beyond the project’s duration.
