Voting and Understanding – Voting Systems
A voting system, also known as an audience response system (ARS), enables lecturers to ask questions during a lecture and have students vote on them.
Students cast their votes anonymously using a voting device – such as a mobile device, e.g. a smartphone, tablet, etc. At the end of a voting round, the distribution of responses is presented graphically. At Hochschule München, the eduVote system, which is web-based, is the one mainly used.
Possible applications
As a teacher, you can use a voting system as follows:
- Revise the material from previous lectures
- Incorporating comprehension questions into lectures
- Perform some quick calculations and put the result to a vote
- Help students prepare for exams by asking targeted questions
- Initiating a discussion based on the results of a vote (peer instruction)
- Assessingpriorknowledge of new topics
The aim of all the examples mentioned is to encourage students to participate actively in the classes.
