Contemporary Issues in Child and Youth Welfare: A Cross-National Collaboration between Munich and Los Angeles
Motivation
How can students develop global skills without travelling abroad? The COIL module brings together first-year Master’s students in Social Work from Los Angeles and final-year Bachelor’s students from Munich to carry out a comparative analysis of child and youth welfare systems – practically-oriented, digital and intercultural, directly from their own locations.
Effect
“This project was a great way to compare child welfare with that in Germany – I learnt quite a lot in the process.”
- Vinny, a student from the US
“I have strengthened my own professional stance and, particularly through comparison with the United States, have come to realise that not all parts of the world respond with the same level of restraint. I continue to believe that we have a very strong child protection system.”
- Natalie, a German student
19 out of 20 US students recommend continuing with the COIL format.
The EvaSys evaluation confirms a high level of satisfaction: overall rating 4.1/5 (mw), Committed and motivated: 5/5. Students develop intercultural and comparative professional competencies that particularly well equip them for social work in a globalised world.
