Parking in Maxvorstadt
Motivation
During the 2025/26 winter semester, 110 architecture students documented 55 car parks in Munich, the ‘city of cars’, using a systematic building survey. They employed five methods – photography, hand drawing, 3D surveying, contemporary archaeology and archiving – to gain an understanding of the everyday phenomenon of parking as part of the city’s automotive heritage. Every two weeks, they visited the selected car park; in the intervening period, the data they had collected was processed and presented. The presentations and feedback for the 55 groups, as well as the preparation and coordination of the various methods, were supported by two tutors.
Effect
"The students are bringing to light what society perceives as trivial or boring. Through the documents produced as a result of their work using various methods, they draw attention to the car parks in Maxvorstadt: Who is allowed to, and able to, make use of this space? Why do we use private transport in the city at all? How could car parks be made available to more than just a select few? What remains of the car once it is gone?"
