Working at Hochschule München: This is what it feels like
We asked people who work at HM – for example, in IT services, laboratory, technology, human resources development, the family office, the library, university communications or the student advice centre – why they enjoy working at HM. Here you will find their answers and insights. All quotes are from HM staff members.
Your options
Friendly, down-to-earth, approachable
Everyone we spoke to agreed: the atmosphere at HM is good. You can sense this right from the job interview, and later on within your own team and when working with other departments.
HM does a lot to promote team-building – for example, with campus tours (organised every semester for all new colleagues), the annual summer party, or new initiatives such as HM Talk: the university management invites all new staff to chat and network over a shared lunch break! HMConnect brings staff members together at random; over a cup of coffee, you get to know the person opposite you and, in the process, learn about other departments or departments.
"I can be myself here!"
That’s right. At Hochschule München, you don’t have to bend out of shape; instead, you can let yourself and your strengths flourish. You do so to the best of your ability, but in a completely natural way. And you do it together, because: “Here, we don’t work against each other, but with each other!” Appreciation is also a key theme. “HM is a very appreciative, family-like place, across all levels of the organisation. The staff are trusted, which is very appealing.”
Really exciting, with plenty of freedom
Do you like to take matters into your own hands and come up with your own ideas? We think that’s brilliant. We give you plenty of creative freedom, encourage initiative and ensure that good suggestions – within the limits of what’s possible – are put into practice. (True to our employer motto: practically brilliant!) Our staff members appreciate the short decision-making processes and the wide range of opportunities: “I can really fulfil my potential and work with a great deal of freedom!”
A particular highlight is the close links with teaching and research. At the HM, even IT or administration professionals, for example, can gain fascinating insights into the latest scientific developments. And when specific questions arise, the concentrated expertise of today and tomorrow is just a few doors down: “We can draw on expertise from the departments on any topic – whether we have questions about business administration or acoustic walls! The Professors are delighted when their expertise is sought after and support us with advice and practical help. You can really feel their passion!”
With pride. And purpose!
As Bavaria’s largest university of applied sciences and one of Germany’s leading institutions in its field, HM brings together more than 18,000 students, over 500 professors, and more than 180 research staff. What unites them is a shared commitment to applied learning and research with real-world impact. Together, they create meaningful change—whether for people, society, the environment, or the climate.
Supporting this mission are more than 550 professional services and administrative staff who make teaching, research, and innovation possible. Their expertise and dedication ensure that the university runs smoothly and successfully every day.
This sense of purpose is something employees at HM deeply value. As one colleague puts it:
“I truly stand behind what happens here every day. The work is meaningful, impactful, and important. This is a place where societal progress is actively shaped and advanced.”
A (genuine) balance between ‘work’ and ‘life’
Why not work wherever you like!
Working from home is the norm for us: anyone at HM with a desk-based role can work from home for up to 60 per cent of their time – calculated over the course of the month. This means that, if necessary, it is even possible to work from home for two full weeks at a time. Whilst other employers are tending to scale back remote working (or, conversely, mandate it 100 per cent), we remain committed to offering a great deal of individual flexibility in the long term. This is a huge advantage, not just for parents, carers or staff members with long commutes.
By the way: “No one checks up on what I do whilst working from home. What counts is the result: that’s a great show of trust!”
Support for families – and with any problems
Whether it’s a nursery place or a carer, there are many questions relating to family life – and not just when you’re changing jobs. We work with an external counselling service that offers advice and practical support to help you with family, personal or work-related questions and problems. The service is impartial, confidential and, if you wish, anonymous. For your children, we offer a limited number of nursery and kindergarten places on Heßstraße, Lothstraße and on the Pasing Campus.
And now let’s stretch out a bit …
We also help bring your body into balance – and get it moving. Just 30 minutes of exercise a day makes all the difference: you can take part in our online fitness programme (during working hours!). Our Health Day is as exciting and motivating as an innovation fair. External experts offer online seminars on topics such as resilience, mental wellbeing and stress management. And our sports team is constantly organising new highlights, from outdoor trips to taking part in university championships.
