History of Hochschule München
Young, yet steeped in history
Hochschule München is a relatively new institution – it was founded in 1971 as a merger of seven Munich-based engineering schools and higher technical colleges, with a further technical college joining in 2002. These predecessor institutions, however, can look back on a long tradition of education dating back to the industrialisation of the early 19th century.
The founding of Hochschule München was the result of a joint effort by the directors, lecturers and students of the engineering colleges at the end of the turbulent 1960s. They called for a reform of engineering education and for the integration of higher technical colleges into the higher education sector. These demands were also supported by higher technical colleges in the fields of business, social sciences and design – and this ultimately led to the establishment of the new Hochschule München.
In the 50 years that have passed since then, Hochschule München has undergone many changes. Its range of courses has grown steadily, whilst research and academic continuing education have been introduced and become firmly established. This refined profile is reflected not least in the change of name from ‘university of applied sciences’ to ‘Hochschule München’, which took place in 2007.
