| - Templates for internship contracts in various languages can be found here.
- The departments internship officer must approve compulsory internships in advance. - The contract needs to be signed by the person responsible in the company where you undertake your internship. - Clarify details regarding courses running alongside internships: e.g. video conferences, block seminars, enrolment in the following semester. | before the internship |
| - Tip: Keep an 'internship diary': write down each day, which tasks you were assigned (and when). These records can later serve as a template or suggestion for the confirmation of internship. | during the internship |
Mandatory internship:
- Once you have found an internship placement, please submit your internship contract to the internship officer for your degree programme for academic approval.
- Please then forward a copy of the already approved contract to the person responsible in the Examination and Internship department and to the International Office.
- In the case of mandatory internships, your department or the Examination and Internship department is responsible for the academic recognition of the successful completion of your internship abroad.
Voluntary internships:
- Voluntary internships do not need to be approved by your department or the Examination and Internship department.
- The International Office is responsible for approving Erasmus+ mobility grants and travel grants.
- The International Office is also responsible for the recognition of the successful completion of your voluntary internship.
- According to Erasmus+ regulations, interns funded by ERASMUS+ are entitled to a formal internship certificate containing the duration, the tasks and work experience as well as the skills acquired during the internship.
Before the internship:
Once the International Office has received the complete Erasmus+ application, the documents are reviewed by the International Office. If all the requirements are met, the Erasmus+ grant is paid out in two instalments:
The first instalment amounts to 80% of the total Erasmus+ grant. It may take a few weeks for the money to reach your account. It is therefore advisable to allow for a financial buffer at the start of your internship.
At the end of the internship:
The remaining 20% will be paid out as soon as all the documents relating to the end of the internship have been received in full. Again, it may take a few weeks for the amount to reach your account. If there is a change to the duration of the internship the remaining balance – after deduction of the first instalment – will be paid out.
The complete Erasmus+ application should be received no later than one month before the start of the internship. If you are unable to meet this deadline, please contact the International Office by email.
It is not possible to receive retrospective Erasmus+ funding once the internship has started.

Erasmus+ internship application requirements
Hochschule München does not arrange or organise internship placements.
Any company may act as a host organisation for internships. ‘Companies’ are organisations engaged in economic activity in the public or private sector, regardless of their size, legal form or industry sector, including the social economy.
The following organisations cannot be host organisations for Erasmus+ funded internships:
- European institutions and bodies
- Bodies and organisations that manage Community programmes (EU programmes)
- National diplomatic missions (embassies, etc.) of the students’ country of origin in the host country
If you earn more than €2,500 gross per month (before taxes), you can apply for a travel allowance as an alternative to the Erasmus+ internship grant. Please send your application by email with the subject line “Travel allowance_SMP_2026”.
Please note that your annual income (including maintenance from your parents) must not exceed an average of €15,000 prior to your stay.
Both voluntary and compulsory internships are eligible for funding through an Erasmus+ internship grant. The internships must always be relevant to the students’ study programme at Hochschule München and must contribute to the students’ academic objectives.
Don’t forget to re-register! You cannot take a leave of absence for a practical semester. During a semester of leave, you cannot complete any coursework, academic credit transfer isn't possible. Practical semesters are, however, a compulsory part of your studies.
If you successfully complete your studies at Hochschule München whilst on your internship abroad and are consequently de-registered, your internship must still have a remaining duration of at least 60 days until the end of the internship (as a graduate internship) in order to be eligible for funding.
If you are planning to undertake an internship after completing your degree – for example, between your bachelor's degree and master’s programmes – you may still be eligible for Erasmus+ funding even if you deregistered, provided that you submit your application for an Erasmus+ internship grant before your deregistration. In that case, you can still receive Erasmus+ internship grants for up to 12 months after deregistering. Funding ends automatically upon enrolment at another higher education institution, as the new institution will then be responsible for your funding.
An Erasmus+ internship can take place in any country within the European Union, as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey.
Unlike Erasmus+ semesters abroad, internships can also be undertaken in Erasmus+ partner countries worldwide (German only).
The minimum duration of an internship abroad is 2 months (60 days).
Regardless of the type and number of Erasmus+ stays abroad, you can receive funding for up to 12 months in total per cycle of study (bachelor's degree/master's degree):
- 12 months in the first cycle of study (bachelor's degree or equivalent), including
postgraduate internships - 12 months in the second cycle of study (master's degree or equivalent), including
postgraduate internships - For single-track degree programmes (e.g. ‘old’ Diplom programmes), the following applies:
Total duration of the Erasmus+ grant: 24 months
You are not covered by international health insurance through Hochschule München.
For basic emergency treatment in the EU, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which you can obtain from your health insurance provider, is sufficient.
For any healthcare services beyond this, such as medical repatriation to Germany, you must have international health insurance.
Under the Erasmus+ programme, it is compulsory for interns to be covered by international health insurance and accident and third-party liability insurance valid in the host country. This coverage is compulsory for Erasmus+ internship grants to be awarded.
Please contact your internship officer. They will be able to provide you with more detailed information. Often, the course is offered as a block module or you may take it in the following semester.
