My HM story: Professor Dr. Matthias Reihle
Professor Dr. Matthias Reihle used to work for a renowned automotive group. He was certainly successful and content, but one day “I asked myself what I wanted to do with my life: stay in industry for good, or try something different?” By chance, Matthias Reihle heard about a vacant professorship at the HM. Today, as Professor of Metallurgical Engineering, he has found his calling – in every sense of the word.
Important links
To be precise, Prof. Dr. Matthias Reihle is Professor of Metallurgical Engineering, including materials testing and non-cutting manufacturing. From industry to a professorship at a University of Applied Sciences (find out more: What is a professorship at a University of Applied Sciences? 5 steps to becoming a professor ): a major step for Matthias Reihle, one that has completely transformed his (professional) life. Here, he describes his experiences and impressions …
A very personal insight …
“It was brilliant arriving here. Everyone was very helpful and friendly; it’s all very personal. (Find out more: visit the information portal for new students ). After a few weeks of lectures, I felt: I’m in the right place here; this is fun; it fulfils me.”
A major plus point: working with young people
“In my first semester, I also taught lectures for first-year students. Seeing the curiosity in their eyes was wonderful and exciting. There’s so much that you take for granted, but they haven’t learnt yet. I advised them to build a strong network. That’s absolutely vital, both professionally and personally; it leads to friendships that last a lifetime. Working with young people is a real bonus for me. It keeps you young, too.”
Freedom! Open doors. And holes in your stomach.
“I’d imagined the bureaucracy to be worse. People here are pragmatic, too. I have more freedom and autonomy than I did at the corporation. I used to be extremely deadline-driven. Now, if something interests me, I can get to grips with it. The freedom is phenomenal. I can deepen my own knowledge and pass it on. That’s outstanding. The students can come and see me at any time; my door is always open. It’s not anonymous here, which makes it fun. If they’re motivated, the students can ask me as many questions as they like.”
"I find the atmosphere relaxed and really friendly. I look forward to coming here every day."
The atmosphere at the HM
“I also enjoy working at HM on days when there are no lectures. I can work really well here, meet great people, have a chat, and take away inspiration from our get-togethers and lunches … The atmosphere in the building is great. I like walking between the buildings – you always bump into someone. And I also like the labs, where we bring theory and practice together with the students.” Find out more: Working at HM – this is what it’s like
Hochschule München in a nutshell?
“A great place to work and live. There’s so much industry in and around Munich, so we’re really close to the real world – that’s a huge advantage.”
“This is the right place for you if you enjoy creative freedom and take pleasure in teaching and supporting people.”
My advice …
“Are you looking to make a career change? Think about what you really want: what makes me happy? HM isn’t the right choice for you if you don’t like speaking in front of large groups or organising your own work. You’ve come to the right place if you enjoy creative freedom and take pleasure in Teaching and supporting people.”
