| Upon becoming a civil servant, you are entitled to a health allowance. Through this allowance, your employer contributes towards a proportion of your healthcare costs. As a civil servant without children or with one child, you are entitled to a 50 per cent allowance; with at least two children, you are entitled to a 70 per cent allowance; and your children are entitled to an 80 per cent allowance. The remaining percentage must be covered separately. This can be done through any private health insurance (PKV) provider that offers tariffs compliant with the civil service allowance scheme. | State Office for Finance: Grant |
The PKV’s outreach campaign makes it easier for civil servants and their dependants to access tariffs that comply with the allowance scheme:
As choosing a suitable health insurance policy depends on individual factors (e.g. age or pre-existing conditions) and personal needs, it is advisable to start looking into different providers at an early stage, for example by obtaining and comparing several quotes. Recommendations from your (future) colleagues or friends can also be helpful in narrowing down your choices. Once you have chosen a provider, you can submit an application for membership. At the same time, you should cancel your current health insurance policy within the specified notice period. Your appointment is a valid reason for cancellation, and the certificate of appointment usually serves as proof. Find out in good time what you need to bear in mind when cancelling your cover due to a switch to the civil service health insurance scheme (notice periods, supporting documents). | Private Health Insurance Association: Information on the ‘Open House’ campaign |
| The cost-reimbursement principle applies to the allowance (as it does to private health insurance). Patients initially pay for healthcare services themselves and receive the allowance upon submission of the invoice to the Allowance Office of the State Office for Finance (LfF). The first application for the allowance must always be submitted in full and in paper form, addressed to: State Office for Finance, Landshut Branch, Allowance Payment Office 2, PO Box 10 02 53, 93002 Regensburg | LfF: Financial assistance / Forms |
