Exams
Important information
Note
Validity of ASPO and APO
The study and examination regulations to which the General Study and Examination Regulations (ASPO) apply are indicated in the headers. For all other study and examination regulations, the General Examination Regulations (APO) apply.
The purpose of examinations is to assess the candidate’s competencies. The competencies assessed are based on the provisions of the study and examination regulations and the module description (Section 29 of the ASPO).
At Hochschule München, the following types of examination may be taken in accordance with the General Study and Examination Regulations and Section 20 of the ASPO:
- in written and oral form (Sections 21, 21a and 22 of the ASPO)
- presentations (Section 23 of the ASPO)
- modular work (Section 24 of the ASPO)
- practical examinations (Section 25 of the ASPO)
- theses (Section 26 of the ASPO)
Exams may also be conducted electronically (Section 27 of the ASPO).
You can find all the relevant information under‘Recognition and academic credit transfer of studies and examination results’.
Each degree programme has its own examination board. This is appointed directly by the Faculty Council for a term of three years and consists of three, five or seven Professors (see Section 16(1), first sentence et seq. of the ASPO in conjunction with Section 16(2), first sentence of the ASPO).
The duties incumbent upon the examination board are set out in Section 16(3) of the ASPO.
You can view your current examination board on the relevant websites of the department.
The examination committee is responsible for all examination matters that are not expressly assigned to another examination body (examiners, examination boards).
The specific duties of the examination committee are set out in Section 15(3) of the ASPO.
The examination committee of Hochschule München consists of the chair and four other members (see Section 15(1), first sentence of the ASPO).
You can find the exact registration dates under ‘Deadlines and dates’.
Proper registration within the specified time limit is required for all examinations. Registration must be completed electronically (online) during the registration period set by the examination committee (see Section 18(1), first sentence of the ASPO).
You must register for all the exams you wish to sit this semester, regardless of the type of examination.
Registration for an exam is only valid for the current exam period. It is therefore important that you re-register for resit exams.
PLEASE NOTE: Registration for exams for Department 13’s AW modules takes place at the same time as you enrol in the modules. Further information on enrolling in AW modules can be found directly on the Department 13’s website.
The deadlines and procedures for registering for bachelor's degree theses and master's degree theses are determined by the departments on the recommendation of the examination board.
Students should generally check online the next working day after registering online for an exam to see whether their registration was successful.
Objections raised by students regarding their examination registration will only be considered if the registration record (PDF file) – which students are expressly advised to print out during the online registration process – is submitted.
If it is not possible to register for an examination online for technical or other reasons beyond the students’ control, registration must be made in writing, specifying the subjects/modules and the registration code number, no later than one week after the end of the registration period (Section 28 of the ASPO) or no later than one working day after the end of the registration period (Section 6(5), sentence 4 of the APO) to the Examination and Internship Office at Hochschule München.
NOTE: The study and examination regulations to which the General Study and Examination Regulations (ASPO) apply are indicated in the headers. For all other study and examination regulations, the General Examination Regulations (APO) apply.
When you register for the AW compulsory elective module online, you are automatically registered for the examination for that module. There is no need to register for the examination separately. Further information on registering for AW modules can be found directly on the Department 13’s website.
Students with disabilities or chronic illnesses who are unable to sit an examination, either in full or in part, in the prescribed format may apply for reasonable adjustments (special examination arrangements), insofar as this is necessary to ensure equal opportunities. The impairment must be substantiated by the submission of a valid medical certificate.
The application must be submitted no later than when registering for the examination in the Examination and Internship Office. It can be submitted via PRIMUSS Online Services.
The general exam period set by the examination committee is published under ‘Deadlines and dates’ for each semester. You must register online for all examinations (including compulsory elective modules, seminar papers, etc.) during the official registration period. This takes place once per semester. You can also find the registration period in the information under ‘Deadlines and dates’, on the website or in the information emails.
Once the official registration period for examinations has closed, the examination dates will be announced by the relevant examination board no later than four weeks before the start of the examination period, and the examination rooms no later than one week before the start of the examination period (see Section 17(4) of the ASPO), either via the departments’ websites and/or by notice boards.
The outcome of the assessment of examinations or other admission requirements, which are subject to simplified assessment within the meaning of Section 7(2), fourth sentence of the RaPO, and the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for admission to a further examination, must be notified to the student by the relevant department no later than one week before the start of the examination period (see Section 19(3) of the ASPO).
The aids required for the examination (calculators, etc.) are determined by the departments for each examination.
The use of unauthorised aids constitutes a breach of examination regulations. Any attempt to breach these regulations will result in the examination being marked as ‘fail’.
Please do not forget to bring a valid form of photo ID with you on the day of the exam, in case you are asked to show proof of identity.
You should also check with the department to find out which mobile devices (such as smartphones, smartwatches, etc.) you are permitted to bring into the examination room.
First resit examination (see Section 36(1) of the ASPO)
Exams taken at Hochschule München that were not passed must be retaken at Hochschule München within the same degree programme.
Any examination that is not passed on the first attempt must be retaken in the following semester; otherwise, it will be regarded as a fail.
Second resit examination (see Section 36(1) of the ASPO)
In accordance with the examination regulations of Hochschule München, a module examination or part of a module examination that has been failed may be retaken a maximum of five times in bachelor's degree programmes and master's degree programmes. In this context, regardless of the form of the examination, each examination specified in the relevant study and examination regulations counts as one examination.
As a rule, the second resit examination must be taken within twelve months of the results of the first resit examination being announced. (Please check the relevant provisions in your study and examination regulations.)
Third resit examination (see Section 36(2) of the ASPO)
In bachelor's degree programmes, a single examination may be retaken for a third time.
A third resit examination is only permitted if, excluding the bachelor’s thesis and the bachelor’s seminar/colloquium, the student has failed no more than four examinations at the time the results of the second resit examination are announced.
BUT! For degree programmes to which the ASPO does not yet apply, the provisions of Section 12(1), sixth sentence of the APO apply: In bachelor's degree programmes, an examination may be retaken a third time, provided that the study and examination regulations for the relevant bachelor's degree programme do not preclude a third retake.
The deadline for sitting resit examinations are not suspended by a leave of absence or withdrawal from the university (exceptions: leave of absence for maternity leave, parental leave, personal illness or caring for a close relative).
Please also note the information provided by the examination committee.
First of all, and generally speaking: nothing!
Registration does not oblige you to sit an examination. The student is deemed to have effectively withdrawn from a registered examination if she/he does not attend the examination.
There’s no rule without an exception!
If deadlines are already in place, it is not possible to miss the exams without facing consequences.
Deadlines begin to run when:
- core subjects (GOP) – which, depending on the applicable study and examination regulations, are usually held at the end of the first or second semester of study – are not taken,
- a retake deadline for a failed examination is already in progress,
- the standard period of study has been exceeded by more than two semesters of study and modules relevant to the completion of your degree are still outstanding.
In all these cases, you would receive a grade of 5 for exceeding the deadline if you do not sit the examination or do not register for it in the first place!
If you are unable to sit an examination for reasons beyond your control, you may submit an informal request to have the deadlines for sitting resits or other deadlines (e.g. core subjects (GOP), or exceeding the standard period of study) extended appropriately.
The validity of the reasons must be substantiated. In the event of illness, a medical certificate must always be submitted (a template for a medical certificate to support a request for an extension of a deadline can be found in the examination committee’s information). Hochschule München may require a medical certificate from a specialist or a public health officer. If an extension of a deadline is not granted, or if the extended deadline is not met, the examination or assessment will be deemed to have failed.
Please also note the information provided by the examination committee. Further details can be found in our FAQs.
If you wish to withdraw from an examination that you are required to sit (core subject (GOP) or resit examination) because you are unfit to take it, you may apply for an extension of a deadline to sit the examination within one week of the examination date. The application must be submitted in writing to Hochschule München, Examination and Internship Office, Lothstr. 34, 80335 Munich.
The reasons given must be substantiated. If you wish to withdraw from an examination that has already begun, please note the following: An examination is deemed to have begun once the examination paper has been issued. Withdrawal from an examination that has already begun will result in a mark of ‘fail’, unless the withdrawal was for reasons beyond your control (e.g. inability to sit the examination due to illness). A template for a medical certificate as proof of withdrawal from an examination that has already begun due to illness can be found in the examination committee’s information.
Any inability to sit the examination that arises during the examination and results in withdrawal must be reported immediately to the examiner or the invigilator and must be noted in the examination record. In addition, the reasons for withdrawal must be notified in writing to Hochschule München, Examination and Internship Office, Lothstr. 34, 80335 Munich, without delay after the examination, i.e. on the day of the examination in question, or at the latest on the third working day following the examination, and must be substantiated.
Any inability to sit an examination due to illness must always be substantiated by the submission of a valid medical certificate issued by a specialist or a public health doctor. Certificates of incapacity for work will not be accepted under any circumstances.
Please also note the information provided by the examination committee.
As a rule, students can view their marked examinations directly at the department on the day the results are announced. The relevant date will be announced in good time under ‘Deadlines and dates’.
In addition, students may request access to their examination papers no later than four weeks after the start of the following semester, subject to the approval of the Chair of the relevant examination board. A reasoned request must be submitted in good time to the Examination and Internship Office at Hochschule München (see Section 33(2) of the ASPO).
No, examinations that have already been passed may not be retaken (see the a contrario interpretation of Article 26(6) of the RaPO in conjunction with Section 10 of the RaPO).
In accordance with Article 12(1), first sentence, point 6 of the AGVwGO (the German ‘Gesetz zur Ausführung der Verwaltungsgerichtsordnung’), you may either lodge an objection against decisions relating to personal matters or bring an action directly.
Once your final academic results have been confirmed, the printing of your graduation documents will be initiated automatically.
It takes six to eight weeks to issue the final documents. You will be notified in writing as soon as they are ready for collection.
If you require early confirmation of your graduation, you can request a certificate of graduation from your Administrator in the Examination and Internship Office.
Further information on this can be found under ‘Final documents’.
