The doctoral centres at Hochschule München
The Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG) enables universities of Applied Sciences to acquire the right to award doctoral degrees in specific subject areas.
Hochschule München, in partnership with OTH Regensburg and Nuremberg Tech, has been particularly successful and has established eight inter-university doctoral centres. These cover almost the entire range of subjects taught at Hochschule München, meaning that doctoral programmes are available for almost all disciplines represented at the university.
A joint set of Framework Doctoral Regulations governs processes across all centres, ensures uniform standards and establishes binding quality assurance measures.

The doctoral centres
Strategic objectives of the inter-university doctoral centres:
- Establish comprehensive quality assurance in doctoral procedures, from supervision and qualification to assessment
- Develop key areas that shape our profile in fields where we excel in research
- Harnessing synergies in the support of early career researchers
- To enable students to gain appropriate qualifications, from a bachelor's degree through to a doctorate
- To provide doctoral candidates with an excellent academic environment
- Promoting interdisciplinary collaboration
If you meet the requirements set out in the doctoral regulations and your doctoral project falls within the subject area of a Doctoral Research Center, you may submit an application to undertake a doctorate at one of these centers. Please refer to the relevant Doctoral Research Center’s webpage for further details.

- The doctoral centres are joint research institutions run by the partner universities
- The partner universities work together to ensure quality in the doctoral centres and pool their experience and expertise
- Professors from all participating universities are members of the board
- Prospective doctoral candidates may enter into a supervision agreement with any member of the academic staff
- The administrative process is handled by the university at which the Doctoral Research Center is based
